He tightened his grip on her wrist and started pulling her out.

"Ouch..." Caroline winced in pain, grimacing at Gilbert. "Let go! You're hurting me! Ow..."

"Hurting you?"

Gilbert closed his eyes, his lashes trembling with a hint of moisture.

Francis rushed over, placing a hand on his brother's shoulder. "Let her go! You’ll hurt Caroline!"

Gilbert looked up, eyes flickering with inner turmoil.

He bent down again, reaching for her.

As he bent down, Caroline clung tightly to Francis’s arm, shaking her head.
