Gilbert stood a little awkwardly in the doorway, lost in his own thoughts and silently chiding himself.

"Alright, let’s catch up later…" Sherilyn glanced up, saw him, and quickly wrapped up her call with Joyce, wishing her a good night.

She put her phone down and stood, a smile still lingering on her lips.

"All done with work?" she asked, strolling over to Gilbert, still carrying that easy grin.

Gilbert felt a wave of relief wash over him. Sherilyn was in a good mood—clearly, he hadn’t messed up.

"Yeah," he nodded. "Charles just left—we were going over some stuff in the study."

Sherilyn nodded too. "Did you take your medicine?"

"I did."

"Open up, let me check."

Gilbert bent down a bit and obediently opened his mouth.

Sherilyn wrinkled her nose as she caught a strong whiff of the medicine. "Yep," she said, satisfied. "You took it."

Gilbert squeezed her hand, a little curious. "You seem pretty happy tonight."

"I am," Sherilyn replied, her eyes sparkling.

One was her brother, the other her best friend—both good people. If things really worked out between them, how could she not be thrilled?

"So, what’s got you so happy? Something good happen?" Gilbert slid his arm around her waist, facing her.

Sherilyn leaned into his chest, tapping his heart with her fingertips. "Not telling."

Gilbert raised an eyebrow. "Ooh, secrets, huh?"

"Yep," she grinned, then relented a little. "It’s about Joyce. Can’t tell you just yet."

She’d never been the type to spill her friends’ secrets, not even to the man she loved. Joyce and Galen were… well, nothing was set in stone. No need to broadcast it to the world just yet.

"Fair enough," Gilbert said, his curiosity fading. He wasn’t the type to fish for gossip between his wife and her bestie.
