Caroline suddenly burst out laughing, but there was nothing warm about it—her voice dripped with sarcasm.

"So, let me get this straight: On her wedding night, Rebecca White didn’t bother staying with her new husband, let him do God-knows-what, and then had the nerve to sneak into your bed?"

"No," Francis cut in, shaking his head with a deep frown. "That's not what happened."

He let out a long breath, his tone low and heavy. "That night, someone drugged me… She didn’t do this on purpose. It was me. I was the one who pulled her in."

He swallowed hard, struggling to get the words out. "She just… walked into the wrong room."

Caroline stared at him, stunned.

The truth hit her like a punch to the gut, leaving her reeling.

She remembered things he’d said before—her lips trembled as she whispered, "So that night, you were… And the child you and Rebecca White had… That’s how it happened?"

"Yeah." Francis nodded.

Caroline let out a bitter, shaky laugh, her face twisted with pain and disbelief. "So, all this time, you didn’t actually lie to me? You didn’t cheat on me? You and Rebecca White—it was just a stupid accident? There was nothing going on between you two?"

He nodded again, his brow furrowed. "That’s right. Back then, it really was just that."
