His hand!
Sherilyn’s eyes flew wide, shock flashing in their depths.
Once again, she tried to break free and run after Karol. “Wait! Don’t go! You haven’t explained about the letter! What letter are you talking about?”
“Sherilyn!”
Gilbert held her tightly, refusing to let go. “Stay away from her! That woman’s not right in the head—she’s completely unhinged!”
They were far too close—practically pressed together.
Her nerves were already rattled from before, and now, with him holding her like this, it all became too much.
At last, she couldn’t take it anymore.
Sherilyn’s eyelids fluttered; her body went limp, and she collapsed in his arms.
“Sherilyn!”
Gilbert’s face drained of color as he caught her just in time.
One look told him—Sherilyn had fainted!
He snapped his head around, glaring at the one responsible.
“What are you all standing around for? Get her out of here!”
“Yes, Mr. Nine!”
“No! What are you doing?!”
Karol’s face was white as a sheet. She called out to Gilbert, her voice ragged with panic, “Mr. Harrison! You can’t do this to me! I didn’t do anything!”
He snorted, utterly dismissive.
She should count herself lucky Sherilyn hadn’t been hurt.
If Sherilyn had come to harm, Karol wouldn’t just be looking at a few years behind bars—she’d never see daylight again.
“Mr. Harrison!”
Karol’s voice broke as she shook her head, pleading, “You already know the truth! Why are you still doing this? You can’t be this heartless! You used to care about me—”
This woman really had lost her mind.
Gilbert’s patience snapped; he didn’t want to hear another word. “Take her away!” he barked.
“Yes, sir!”
“No, don’t—!”
Karol struggled wildly, sinking her teeth into the guard’s arm. He cried out and let go, and to everyone’s surprise, she managed to break free.
“Don’t let her get away!”
Sherilyn nodded, accepting his concern. “Thanks.”
She glanced out the window. “Where are we going?”
This wasn’t the route back to Blue Haven.
“The hospital,” Gilbert replied. “You fainted from fright. I want a doctor to check you over—just to be safe.”
Fainted from fright?
Sherilyn gave a silent, cynical smile. Just as well—she’d been worried she might give herself away, but he’d come up with the perfect excuse for her.
“No need,” Sherilyn said, shaking her head. “I was startled, but I’m fine now. I don’t need a doctor—I’m not that fragile.”
“Let’s have you checked anyway…”
Gilbert’s brow creased, still uneasy. To faint from a scare—her constitution must be far too delicate.
“We’re almost there. Just around this corner.”
Sherilyn didn’t bother arguing. If he wanted her to see a doctor, so be it.
An ER doctor wouldn’t be able to tell what was really wrong with her anyway.
She changed the subject. “Where’s Naomi? I need to see her. I have questions.”
“Alright. I’ll arrange it.”
