Gilbert’s expression tightened. Sherilyn was heading straight for Caroline.
“Sherilyn!” He hurried after her, a sense of impending chaos tightening in his chest.
He tried to reason with her. “It’s late—”
Her glare could have cut him in half. “Shut up. Don’t make me cause a scene with you right here.”
The hospital’s surgical wing was just ahead. They reached the building in silence, the tension between them thick enough to choke.
They took the elevator and headed for orthopedics.
Sherilyn raised her hand and rapped on the door to Caroline’s room.
The night nurse answered, surprised to see them. “Ms. Gomez… Mr. Harrison? What are you doing here so late—?”
Sherilyn didn’t bother listening. She brushed past the nurse, marching straight into the room.
“Hey—what’s going on?” The nurse looked to Gilbert for help. “Mr. Harrison, shouldn’t you stop her?”
Gilbert could only stand there, silent. Sherilyn had already told him to keep out of it—and from the look in her eyes, if he tried to intervene, she’d probably turn on him too.
“Caroline!”
Caroline had just lain down, ready to sleep. She looked up, startled, as Sherilyn stormed toward her, accusation written all over her face.
“You read Karol’s letter to me. You took it from my room. Didn’t you?”
Caroline blinked, completely lost.
After what happened last time, she instinctively shrank back, trembling.
Her voice came out in a whimper, completely off-topic. “You… I know you! You’re mean—you yelled at me! You hurt me!”
Then she caught sight of Gilbert behind Sherilyn. Relief flashed across her face as she lifted her hand. “Gilbert—”
“Sherilyn, stop… Can’t you see? She’s really sick.”
“Don’t touch me!” Sherilyn recoiled from his hand as if burned, her anger boiling over. She jabbed a finger at Caroline.
“It was her! She took Karol’s letter that night! That’s why Karol came after me today with a knife—because of her! She wants me dead!”
Her voice softened suddenly as she looked Gilbert in the eye.
“And still, you’re defending her? Or do you just not believe me?”
“I’m not—I do believe you!” Gilbert nodded quickly, caught between the two women and at a complete loss.
“Whoever’s responsible will pay—if Karol tried to hurt you, I won’t let her get away with it.” He glanced at Caroline, curled in on herself, barely recognizable. “But look at her… she’s not well…”
He swallowed hard. “Sherilyn, she’s lost her mind.”
“Lost her mind? Ha!” Sherilyn threw her head back and laughed, bitter and wild. “That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all night. The most ridiculous, pathetic excuse I’ve ever heard!”
