Afterwards, Sherilyn drove Rebecca White back to the office.

The treatment was over, but Rebecca still had to work.

“We’re here.”

The car pulled up to the curb. Sherilyn walked Rebecca to the company entrance, noticing that her eyes were still red and swollen.

She offered a gentle word. “Focus on work, all right? And don’t dwell on it anymore… It wasn’t your fault.”

Rebecca forced a small, brave smile. “I’ll head in now.”

“Okay.”

The next day.

9 p.m.

Sherilyn had just tucked Jenna into bed. She returned to her room, getting ready to turn in for the night.

Gilbert wasn’t home yet. Lately, he’d been leaving early for the hospital and coming back late in the evening. She’d gotten used to it and never asked questions.

Just then, her phone rang. It was Rebecca.

“Sherilyn, are you free? Want to grab a drink with me?”

“Sure.”

She agreed without a second thought. She could use a drink herself—drowning her worries sounded just about perfect tonight.

They met at a bar on Riverbank Street. By the time Sherilyn arrived, Rebecca had already ordered for them.

“Sit down.”

“We’re not leaving till we’re good and drunk.”

“Deal.”

As the two women clinked glasses and started drinking, Candida quietly sent Gilbert a message.

[Mr. Nine, Ms. Gomez went out for drinks.]

She included a photo and their location for good measure.

Gilbert replied almost immediately.

[Got it. I’ll pick her up when I’m done.]

Rebecca had arrived early and was already slurring her words by the time Sherilyn settled in.

“You know…”

She hugged the bottle to her chest, chin resting on the rim, swaying a little. “If Caroline hadn’t gone into the wrong room that night… do you think I’d be happy now?”

Sherilyn’s buzz vanished in an instant. She grabbed Rebecca’s arm. “Come on! Don’t just stand there—let’s get to the hospital!”

“Okay!”

They jumped into the Harrisons’ car and sped off toward Ironforge General.

When they arrived at the hospital plaza, Sherilyn and Rebecca got out. Candida quickly texted Gilbert an update.

[Mr. Nine, Ms. Gomez is at the hospital. Rebecca’s ex-husband is in trouble. Don’t worry.]

Rebecca stumbled out of the car, nearly tripping as she raced toward the emergency entrance.

“Rebecca, slow down!” Sherilyn hurried after her—then suddenly stopped short, eyes widening.

“Francis.”

Before Rebecca could react, someone caught her in a tight embrace.

“What are you doing here?” Francis looked down at her, concerned. He’d just come out of the surgical wing, on his way to the Galloways’ place, and hadn’t expected to run into her.

His first instinct was to check her over. “Are you feeling unwell? Where does it hurt?”

“No!” Rebecca struggled out of his arms, flustered. “I don’t have time to explain—let me go!”

She took off running toward the ER.

Francis turned to Sherilyn, confused. “Sherilyn? You’re here too—do you know what’s going on?”
