What does this mean?
Gilbert frowned in confusion as he twisted the cap off the pill bottle.
Sherilyn had told him not to just glance at it and move on. Did she mean he should check every single pill?
He decided to do exactly that.
He shook a handful of pills into his palm and gathered them together.
Suddenly, a chill ran down his spine.
A thought struck him, and he began to count the pills one by one: one, two... twenty... thirty.
Exactly thirty.
He picked up the bottle and read the label. Sure enough, it clearly said: 30 tablets.
A full bottle. Not a single one missing.
Gilbert slowly looked up, his voice strained. “You... didn’t take a single pill?”
“That’s right.”
Sherilyn nodded, a faint smile still on her lips. “This time I checked very carefully.”
She let out a soft sigh. “Both prescriptions were filled at the same time. I only took half a sleeping pill the other night because I couldn’t sleep.”
“Why?”
Gilbert’s grip tightened around the bottle. “The sleeping pills are just supposed to help...”
“Why?” Sherilyn echoed him, her tone light and almost playful. “Because if I don’t take my medication, my condition will only get worse.”
Gilbert stared at her in shock. “You want to get worse? On purpose?”
She gave a small, almost cheerful laugh and nodded.
He shot up from his chair, his eyes wide with disbelief. “Is it... because of me?”
“Yes.” Sherilyn’s smile faded, but she nodded again.
Gilbert let out a shaky breath and closed his eyes tightly, shaking his head in pain. “Even if you hate that I’m taking care of Caroline, that’s no reason to destroy your own health!”
“Then tell me, what am I supposed to do?” Sherilyn tilted her head back, her voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t know what else to do.”
She knew it would come to this.
Sherilyn let out a weary sigh. “That’s why I say—I’ll never get better. Do you see it now?”
“What?” Gilbert’s mind was in chaos. “What am I supposed to understand?”
Suddenly, his eyes sharpened as he stared at Sherilyn in disbelief.
His lips trembled. “You... you mean...”
“I think you’ve figured it out,” Sherilyn said calmly. “But whether you have or not, I’ll just say it.”
“I’m not taking my medication on purpose. I want my condition to get worse—ideally, I’d have a breakdown right in front of you. Make sure you see it with your own eyes. Isn’t that what you wanted?”
She actually laughed.
“Honestly, things are spiraling faster than I even planned... You must have been terrified when you saw me today, weren’t you?”
She kept talking, barely pausing for breath.
“If I keep refusing treatment, if I keep skipping my pills... things are only going to get worse for me.”
