It wasn't even four o'clock yet, but the guests had already begun to arrive in droves. Sherilyn arrived early, and with Blake and Caleb not yet in sight, she found a quiet corner to wait for them, sipping occasionally from a glass of water she held.
"Is that Sherilyn?" came a voice unexpectedly.
Looking up, Sherilyn recognized Callie Robinson, who had been a dance instructor in her group back when Sherilyn worked at the TV station. Callie's face beamed with delight. "It really is you! I thought I might have been mistaken."
"Hello, long time no see," Sherilyn replied with a polite, restrained smile. Mrs. Robinson wasn't the easiest person to deal with, so it was best to keep the conversation brief.
"Long time no see," Callie echoed, her eyebrows raising in surprise. "Why are you here alone? Aren't you with Gilbert?"
Sherilyn was taken aback. Was Gilbert here as well?
"Oh!"
Noticing Sherilyn's reaction, Callie speculated, "You didn't know he was coming? Did you arrive separately? Don't tell me..."
With exaggerated shock, Callie blurted out, "Did you guys break up?"
Their relationship had been publicly announced with much fanfare not long ago, but breakups were common, especially among the wealthy, where temptations and choices were abundant.
Pressed by Callie's questioning, Sherilyn nodded, "Yes, we broke up."
"Ha!" Callie clapped her hands in excitement. "I knew it wouldn't last!"
Without wasting a moment, she exclaimed, "I'm going to find Gilbert right now!" She hurried off, then turned back to Sherilyn with a grin, "Thanks, Sherilyn!"
Thank her? Sherilyn was momentarily stunned, then could only offer a wry smile.
Her phone rang, and it was Blake.
She quickly answered. "Hello, Blake."
"Sherilyn, Mr. Marshall and I have arrived..."
"Okay, I'll come over."
After hanging up, Sherilyn went to meet Blake and Caleb.
After the introductions, the investor seemed pleased with Sherilyn.
"Sherilyn, you can go take a break now."
"Alright, Mr. Marshall, Blake, Mr. Brown, please enjoy your discussion."
Knowing the director and the investor had matters to discuss, Sherilyn tactfully excused herself. She figured she wouldn't be needed anymore.
Sherilyn thought about staying just a little longer before leaving. Not knowing many people there and feeling out of place, she decided to find a quiet spot to pass the time.
She went upstairs where it was less crowded. After standing on the balcony for about twenty minutes and just as she was about to leave, she heard footsteps approaching—more than one person.
"Gilbert, there you are!" It was Callie's voice. Complaining, she continued, "You really know how to hide. I've been looking everywhere for you!"
Then, Gilbert's voice followed. "Did you need something?"
"Yes!" Callie ran up to him, looping her arm through his with familiarity.
