Watching Gilbert beam with joy, Sherilyn frowned, a tangle of anxiety knotting her stomach.

“Oh, right…” Gilbert remembered something and then added, “Sherilyn, about your movie…”

“I can’t do the movie anymore?”

Sherilyn was troubled. “But the shooting has already started. It wouldn't be right for me to drop out now.”

Gilbert thought it would be best not to proceed with the movie.

But Sherilyn didn’t want to quit, and he couldn’t force her.

“How about this…”

After thinking for a moment, Gilbert suggested, “I’ll assign a female bodyguard to stay close to you at all times. You need to make sure you never leave her sight.”

His tone became more serious as he emphasized, “Remember, at all times, including when you go to the restroom.”

This was no joke, and Sherilyn understood.

She wasn’t foolish enough to risk her safety over pride.

Nodding solemnly, she agreed.

“But…”

Sherilyn still had her concerns. “Living in Blue Haven…”

Wouldn’t that mean staying under the same roof as Naylor?

“No.”

Gilbert got her point. “He annoys me too. We’ll stay in the South Building. It’s separated from the main house by a garden, with its own southern entrance. If we don’t make an effort, we won’t run into him.”

That sounded manageable.

Sherilyn breathed a sigh of relief, feeling some of the pressure lift.

“Mommy.” Jenna looked up at her with those big eyes. “Where are we going?”

“We’re moving, sweetie. To a new place.”

“Where to?”

Gilbert watched his daughter with a smile, gently stroking her soft, fluffy hair, so much like Sherilyn’s – shiny and black as satin, unlike his own coarse hair.

“Yay!”

Jenna leaped from her mother’s arms into Gilbert’s, “I love slides! I love swings!”

“Hmm?” Gilbert raised an eyebrow, feigning hurt. “Does Jenna only love slides and swings?”

“I love Mr. Gilbert too!”

Quick as a whip, Jenna hugged Gilbert’s neck, planting a kiss on his cheek.

Then, whispering in his ear, she said, “Mr. Gilbert will chase away the bad guys, protect me and mommy. Mr. Gilbert is the best! Thank you, Mr. Gilbert! I love you the most!”

Gilbert felt a pang in his heart, his eyes suddenly moist, tasting the bitterness of his guilt.

They, mother and daughter, were his responsibility.

Yet now, he was hearing ‘thank you’ from his own daughter!

Looking at the child in his arms, his smile was tinged with sadness: “I love Jenna the most too.”

He wished for nothing more than to give his daughter a complete home, to bring all the beauty in the world right to her feet.
