William remained kneeling at Emelie's feet, his tall frame allowing him to rise just enough to embrace her.

He gently ran his hand down her back to soothe her trembling. He knew how much she was hurting.

Her pain was layered from carrying the weight of her family's vengeance all those years. It was also the toll of their never-ending battles, and the looming reality of his short time left.

William swallowed hard, trying to speak in a lighter tone. "Remember our wedding? We were halfway through it. How about we finish the other half now? If the groom could go from Wesley to Samuel, why can't it change from Samuel to me?"

Emelie's fists hit William's back, but he remained stubborn.

"Marry me. Please, marry me… I brought the ring. It's the same one—Eros. It's always been yours. Put it back on, will you?" he insisted.

William pulled out Eros from his pocket as he spoke. The diamond was still pristine, no matter how much time had passed.

"And what? So I can cut my finger again?" Emelie questioned him.

She wasn't ready to give in. "I've got two scars, both because of you. Do you know how long they'll last? Sure, they'll fade. Maybe in ten, or 20 years, you'll barely see them. My skin will regenerate and heal.

"But after I die, even when my body's nothing but bones, a forensic examiner will still be able to tell the scars. They'll know I had a puncture wound in my chest and that my finger was severed."

William said, "Then let's skip the burial. We'll get cremated and mix our ashes. We'll blend so completely that my ashes can fill the gaps in your bones. How about that?"

Emelie bit down on William's shoulder, frustrated at his absurd words.

Why would he say something like that? It had to be something that he picked up from Elias. When all else failed, Elias would resort to nonsense.

"Since he was still there, it's impossible that he didn't see me throw you into the water. There's no way he wouldn't have gone after you."

Though it seemed like a risk, it wasn't. Wesley would never abandon Emelie. He would have done anything to save her.

They were both there for Emelie. Even though William and Wesley were enemies, William trusted Wesley. He knew that Wesley would do everything in his power to save Emelie, to bring her back to life.

Emelie shut her eyes.

William gently stroked her back. "Back then, all three families were watching us like hawks. With you not trusting me, there was no way I could take you with me. I had no choice but to send you away.

"But if I had brought your body back, I can't have doctors undergo surgery to save you. The families were constantly watching my every move. Giving you to Wesley was the only way."
