Edric was speechless at Irene's words. It was true-Margaret was the kind of person who would do such a thing. He could not think of anything to refute her words.
"Edric, we are finished. If you have even the tiniest bit of affection towards me, if you really want what's best for Eden, then I beg you to let me go. Nathan and I will get married soon. I am imploring you not to pester us anymore! Please!" Edric's eyes darkened when he heard that. In his mind, he thought, "Irene, are you so eager to marry Nathan? Don't you feel anything for me?"
Seeing that he was silent, Irene didn't want to stay there any longer and walked right past him out the door.
"You really aren't going to give me a chance?" Edric asked pitifully.
Tears began streaming down her face. Irene turned her head away to prevent Edric from seeing her cry. "Even if I give you a chance, so what? You have a mother who looks upon me so unkindly. We are destined to be unhappy if we live together. Edric, love is not everything. I can't take this anymore. I suffered so much in the three years we were married. How much more of that do you want me to go through?"
Her voice was laced with unspeakable sadness and desolation. Edric felt his heart sink, his body rooted to the floor like a statue. Even as she disappeared from sight, he stood there, transfixed by her words.
On the same night, Marie and Lily arrived at San Fetillo Hospital, both well- prepared to carry out the embryo implantation surgery. It was a routine procedure for Marie; after all, she was a skilled surgeon. During the procedure, she deftly implanted the embryo into Lily's womb, her skillful hands making miraculous work. After the surgery went off without a hitch, they both sighed in relief. Marie instructed Lily to rest in the ward for a few hours and cautioned her not to move about too much or strain her body with exercise. This was to prevent the embryo from getting dislodged from her womb, which would cause the surgery to fail.
After that, Marie left the hospital while Lily stayed in the ward with Deborah.
Not long after Marie left, a man in a military jacket snuck into the hospital. He made a few rounds in the wards before heading to the parking lot. There, he took stock of his surroundings. At this hour, security was a little lax; hence, he watched and waited for a while before noticing an Audi parked in one corner. Walking quietly over to the car, he peeped inside.
At a glance, his eyes lit up in delight. In the car was a lady's handbag. The man whipped out a glass cutter and cut a hole in the car window. In a flash, he grabbed the handbag, cleared out all of its valuables, and disappeared into After Dark.
Meanwhile back in Mencodia, Margaret sensed that something was wrong when she noticed Eden being rushed to the hospital. Britney was normally courteous towards her, but after seeing how bad the condition Eden was in, her attitude had completely changed. She commanded her servants to show Margaret out, and then retired to her study with a stormy expression on her face.
Margaret thought herself worthy of more respect. Thus, being shooed out by Britney's servants like this was very insulting to her. But she had no excuse to linger there. After leaving the home of the White family, she huffily returned to her hotel. Along the way, she kept calling Edric, but he didn't pick up.
By now, her anger had reached its boiling point, and she needed to find someone to lash out on. When she was in San Fetillo, the first person she would look for was Loraine. But now that she was in Mencodia, she had no one around her.
With no other solution, Margaret thought of Marie and called her up at once, even though it was so late at night at this moment. Marie had finished the surgery and had just returned home. Seeing Margaret calling at this hour, she assumed that something serious must have occurred; therefore, she answered the call immediately. In a flurry of spluttering words, Margaret told her what had happened earlier that day. Upon hearing that Eden was Edric's child, Marie was taken aback, saying, "Surely, you must be mistaken?"
"No, it's true! I thought the same at first; I refused to believe the child was Edric's. But when we met and I took a closer look, I realized that he's the spitting image of Edric when he was a young boy. He really is Edric's child!" Margaret wasn't doubting the child's identity. She was more indignant at Irene's attitude towards them. "That malicious woman secretly gave birth to a child and kept his existence from us. What is she playing here?"
"She's definitely up to no good," responded Marie. Naturally, Marie wanted to add fuel to the fire. "She is obviously using her son for selfish reasons." "Why didn't she tell us that she was pregnant when she got divorced? If she had, I wouldn't have made her divorce Edric." Margaret was the type of person to always push the blame onto someone else. Clearly, she was the one who had forced Irene to divorce Edric, but now she somehow managed to twist the story around and put the blame on Irene.
"Who knows what she was thinking." But Marie knew, of course, why Irene had kept silent. She was just like Myra, a stubborn and prideful woman. She was convinced that Edric had betrayed her, so obviously she kept the news of her pregnancy to herself. For Marie, this was the perfect opportunity to gaslight Margaret so she could hate Irene more, thus paving the way for Marie's own plans.
"I think she is deliberately torturing both Edric and you. She knows you want grandchildren and that Edric feels sorry towards her. She is trying to upset the peace in your family!" barked Marie.
Margaret was now convinced that this was indeed Irene's motive. She was deliberately taking revenge on Margaret and Edric. Marie's words had made a deep impression on her. "Yes, that's it! She hates us, so she wants to take revenge on us. What a vile woman! I'll put an end to her schemes!"
"What are you going to do?" Marie asked tentatively.
"That boy belongs to the Myers family, so of course I'll take him back. As for Irene, if she even thinks about stepping into the Myers family again, she can dream on! Not while I'm still alive," Margaret spoke these words wholeheartedly and emphatically. She knew she must have Eden. She and Irene were enemies from the start. Really, how Irene could have ever been a good match for Edric? Margaret swore that she would never allow Irene to walk through those doors again.
"She definitely isn't going to agree to give the child to you," reminded Marie.
"She won't have a choice. Does she think she can beat us?" Margaret said arrogantly, "I'll just throw some money her way. If she refuses, I'll file a lawsuit against her. Let's see who will win!"
This was basically a declaration of war. Perhaps Margaret really was too stupid to see where this would all lead. Irene wasn't just some ordinary girl - she was Steven's daughter. Margaret was convinced that she would win the lawsuit, but Marie knew better. Steven wouldn't sit idly by if Irene lost custody of Eden. Then again, perhaps it was better this way. A declaration of war did have some upsides to everyone involved.
Marie continued to egg Margeret on. "Yes, if she doesn't agree, take her to court. With the financial backing of the Myers Group, there's no way she'll be able to keep the child!"
Margaret's mood lifted after hearing Marie's persuasive words, but Marie was still pensive. She had to put in a few good words for Lily so Margaret would rally behind them in support. "Margaret, I'm telling you, you can't give in to someone like Irene. The child belongs to the Myers family; you must take him back. With such a sh*tty person like Irene as his mother, you have to really take good care of him. Lily is way better for that boy than Irene. While Irene has been stirring things up between you and Edric, Lily has been running up and down, preparing for the sports tournament. I heard Deborah say that almost everything under the sports tournament will fall to the Myers Group."
"Really?" Margaret was delighted.
