Esther didn't expect Finnegan to find Luther's place. She was too scared to move forward when she saw Finnegan gasp and stand in front of her, looking aloof.

"Why are you here? What is this place?" he asked.

Esther kept her head down and was too nervous to speak. She quietly said, "Shouldn't I be asking you how you found this place?"

"Esther!"

"Yes?"

"Why are you here?" Finnegan was angry with her. No young woman would go off with a man she barely knew without asking questions first. Moreover, she didn't even know where she was.

Esther stepped back, trying to keep a safe distance. "A stranger wanted to tell me something important. That's why I came here with him."

"What stranger? What's his name? Where is he now?"

Esther felt awkward as Finnegan bombarded her with questions. "His name is Luther Crawford, but I don't know where he is right now."

"Luther Crawford?" That last name made Finnegan's expression turn serious. "Is he related to James?"

Esther didn't notice anything odd in his tone. She nodded. "Yes, he said he knew something about James, so I came here with him. He told me a lot, and I understood a lot of things too."

"Esther, what do you see in him? There are so many good men out there. Why are you stuck on him?"

Finnegan's harsh words scared Esther and made her cry. "I didn't mean that. I—"

"Why are you crying? What's there to cry about?"

Esther hadn't planned to cry, but she started sobbing because of his mocking tone. "Finnegan, why are you so angry?"

Finnegan took a deep breath. Finally, he couldn't hold back any longer. "It's because I like you. Can't you see?"
