Pearl gently rubbed her sore neck, which had turned a bright red, and coughed. "Luther, I know it's hard for you to accept who you really are."

Luther looked up, a smirk playing on his lips. "What do you think you know about me? You know nothing. Ever since I was five, when my mom died, I've been on my own. Agnes felt so guilty for not being able to save her that she gave me a lot of money. But she also warned me to never go back to Enswood.

"Even though I had several hundred thousand dollars in savings, I was just a kid. When my mother's relatives found out, they wanted to take me in, but I knew they were just after my money.

"I ended up living with my uncle instead. But do you have any idea what my life was like with him? He was a drunk who often lost his temper. He never wanted to hit his own son, so he took out his anger on me instead."

Luther gave a hollow laugh and rolled up his sleeve, revealing a long, ugly scar. "This one came from a time he attacked me with a butcher's knife. I lost so much blood that I passed out. Realizing I might actually die, he panicked and took me to a small clinic. They just wrapped up the wound without cleaning it properly, and it got infected. I almost lost my arm because of that."

Pearl stood there, speechless. She hadn't known about the harsh realities Luther had faced as a child.

"After that ordeal, I figured out that my uncle had only taken me in for my money. So, no matter how much he beat me, I never gave him my bank account PIN. Eventually, he got so frustrated that he kicked me out.

"But, you know, when one door closes, another opens. I was taken in by a couple who thought I was handsome and wanted me to be their son. I thought my luck was finally turning around, but that was just another low point in my life."

Pearl saw the sadness on his face and knew something indescribable happened.

"The husband was a pervert, and at first, I felt someone touching me when I was sleeping, then I found out he would sneak into my room and do disgusting things to me."

Luther continued, "After that, I used the money I had to build my power until no one dared to bully me anymore. I learned that the only way to stop people from looking down on me was to make myself stronger."

He reached out to touch her face. "I might have feelings for you, but that's not what's important. I want you because you're capable. I love that feeling, but I'm also scared that one day you could destroy everything I've built. So I tried to bring you close to me, and if that didn't work, I was prepared to destroy you."

Pearl slapped his hand away and stepped back. "You're acting crazy, Luther."

"I know. I haven't been sane for a long time," Luther replied bitterly. "Tell me, what's the point of having feelings? They're pointless."
