"What are you getting on my case about now Janie, huh? I told you we would miss our tour, but you just had to go and spend two hours at the damn shopping mall so that's what fucking happens."
"So why didn't you remind me!" my wife hollered, slamming something down in the bathroom. I sighed, frustrated and at the end of my rope with her. We'd been in Russia on vacation for less than 24 hours, and she'd already somehow turned the blame of our missed tour on me and made everything about herself. Honestly, if the rest of our trip was going to be like this I'd rather get back on the plane this second.
She came stomping out the bathroom, hands on her hips. "Next time, you remind me when an event is coming up. I'm not going to have you screw up this trip like you screw up every damn vacation we have!" She started grabbing her pillows from her side of the bed in a fury.
"And where the hell are you going?" I mocked. "Guest bedroom. Thankfully this hotel room is big enough so I don't have to see your stupid face."
"You got that right sweetheart!" She shut the door to the guest bed firmly and I sighed of relief, flopping onto my back.
It was pretty late, but the view of Moscow through the ceiling to floor window showed anything but. It was bustling out there, lively and bright. I was rather enjoying myself aside from my difficult significant other.
I dimmed the lights and took out a small book I found in the drawer of the nightstand. I looked it over curiously, noticing the title was the name of the hotel we were staying at.
I was pleasantly surprised to see it was a little history-filled book, with information about the hotel whose construction dated back over 100 years ago. I smiled at how antique and homely it looked back in the day, as I leafed through black and white images. I read the biography of the original hotel owner: Pietrov Valchenski a large man with a big mustache and a funny hat. He was one of the most successful businessmen in Russia at the time, and had dabbled in all kinds of business ventures from hotels to restaurants to brothels?
My eyes raised at that last one and I read on to see that Pietrov actually owned several of these brothels all over town, and occasionally hired his girls to do side work at the hotel like make the beds, bring wine and cheese to guests, and offer "special" services to certain aristocrats.
I flipped the page and my face immediately broke into a grin. Pietrov was pictured with a woman by the name of Alina. It was incredible that she was photographed so long ago because she looked fresher and more stunning than most women I knew today. She was a gorgeous creature- her curvy body was dressed in fine silks, her red hair curled and loose..I was drawn to her unique face more than anything else. She had a seductive glint in her eyes and sweet pouty lips made for sin. God, I was getting carried away over someone who's been dead for probably decades..I really need to get laid.
I remembered my wife in the room next to me and sighed, knowing I wouldn't be getting anything from her for a while. I continued reading about Alina's fascinating life. She had been working in the factories for nearly all her adolescence when Pietrov discovered her. She went on to be one of his highest-earning prostitutes and performed so well, other girls attempted to sabotage her beauty to no avail. She attracted the admiration and lust of many wealthy nobles who showered her with gifts of jewels and lavish vacations. Alina was so popular that she had many lovers.
Her demise however came one day when one of her jealous lovers, a brilliant alchemist, caught her servicing another man in the hotel. He went unnoticed in his discovery however and promptly concocted a poison and injected it into her wine. The jealous lover, consumed with guilt, drank his own poison and died next to her. When Alina was discovered, she was found to be just as beautiful dead as she had been alive and suffered no physical defects in her mortality.
The author of this handbook added a note at the end: To this day, it is still widely believed that the spirit of the beautiful Alina roams gracefully through the halls, humming an old tune she was often known to sing. What is most convincing is the trace of the fragrance of the Hildell herb that several guests have identified in the halls. This herb, which Alina often rubbed onto her wrists, is no longer in existence today.
Spooked out and a little turned on, I closed the book and put it back into the drawer. Just as I reached out to turn off the lamp, it went dark completely on its own.
