The force of Ethan’s grip sent pain shooting through my arm as he dragged me into his private residence. My feet barely touched the ground as we burst through the door, his movements fueled by a desperation I rarely
saw in the Alpha King.
“Please, I beg you! Let my daughter go!” Victoria’s frantic voice reached us before I could even take in the
scene.
My eyes adjusted to find Victoria on her knees in the center of the living room, her perfect hair disheveled, mascara streaking down her pale cheeks. A few feet away stood a man I’d never seen before, his face
contorted with rage as he held a silver–edged hunting knife to Emma’s throat.
“Don’t hurt her, I beg you,” Victoria sobbed, her hands clasped in front of her as if in prayer.
Emma’s small body trembled, her eyes wide with terror as the knife pressed against her skin. The scent of fear permeated the room, so thick I could almost taste it.
“Now you know to beg?” the man snarled, his grip tightening on Emma’s shoulder. “A woman like you who
likes to cheat deserves to die!!”
His words struck me as oddly specific. I studied his face unfamiliar, yet somehow his timing was too perfect. He’d appeared just after I had told Ethan about Victoria’s cheating in the competition.
Victoria pressed her forehead to the floor, kowtowing repeatedly in desperation. “Take me instead! Please, she’s just a child!”
Each time her head hit the floor, a small smear of blood appeared on the polished wood. The display was pitiful enough to soften even the hardest heart.
But something wasn’t right.
“You b***h’s daughter will also be a scourge in the future,” the man yelled, his voice carrying an artificial quality that only I seemed to notice. “You all deserve to die!”
The attackers eyes widened in fear, but instead of surrendering, he made a sudden move. The knife flashed in the light as he lunged toward Emma
