Chapter 0286 

Ella POV 

I watched as the other cars reached the building. Alexander had just entered, the door hadn’t even swung shut behind him yet. 

The black car, the one that Alexander’s men were in, stopped first. Four men, each in a black suit, jumped out of the car immediatley. One of them ran towards the building, the others stood near the car, glaring at the oncoming 

blue cars. 

The first to stop was the darker blue and out stepped four men. They were dressed in casual clothes, each of them with a mean looking grin on their face. 

Without a word passing between them, they rushed at Alexander’s men. My face paled as I watched a brutal fight begin. 

Then the lighter blue car approached. It stopped and so did my heart. 

David was in that car. He had to be. They had Alexander’s men outnumbered. I had to find a way to delay them, to buy him some time. Just a few minutes would be enough. 

The driver’s side door opened and one large, bald man stepped out. He had huge shoulders and bulging muscles. He walked past the other fighting men towards the building 

Alexander’s guard who had run ahead intercepted him. They began to fight. 

I looked back at the light blue car. The passenger door flew open. 

David stepped out. 

I felt my breath catch. 

Alexander’s four men were fighting of the five David had hired. They were outnumbered and doing everything they could to hold them off and give Alexander the time he needed inside the building. They couldn’t fight David,

That was it. There was no one else to block his access to the building. Someone had to stop him or we were really in trouble. But there was no one left. 

No one but me. 

Alexander’s voice from a few moments earlier echoed in my mind. 

“Stay in the car.” 

Ignoring it, I threw the door open and rushed out, stumbling slightly in my hate. My heart was thundering in my ears, but I stood in front of the car. I tried to keep my head up and look confident, even though I didn’t feel it. 

David paused and turned to face me. 

He was a shadow of his former self–pale, dark circles carved beneath his eyes, his expression twisted with something unhinged. He slammed the door shut and stepped around the car, his gaze locked onto mine. 

A slow, malicious grin spread across his face. 

“You must have lost your damn mind,” David snarled as he stalked toward me.. 

Behind him, I could see that the car was empty. There was no one else hiding, waiting to spring out and overpower the others. This was it.

All I had to do was keep David busy. 

Alexander and his men could handle whoever David had hired this time. The only wild card was David himself unhinged, unpredictable. There was no telling what he might do to protect himself now. I just had to keep him away from Alexander and Dr. Melntyre. 

“And I could say the same to you,” I shot back, dropping my arms to my sides but never taking my eyes off him. You look almost as crazy as you actually are.” 

David laughed—a hollow, joyless sound that sent a shlver down my spine. 

“And whose fault is that?” he snapped, the grin vanishing from his face in an instant, replaced by a furious scowl. “Who reduced me to this? Whose fault is it that I’m in this position?” 

“It’s your own fault,” I said coldly. “You created all your own problems, David. You don’t get to blame them on anyone else.” 

“You did this to me!” he roared, his face contorted in rage. You destroyed everything, and I’m going to make sure you pay for it!” 

Then he lunged. 

Hatred burned in his eyes as he closed the distance between us. 

All the training I’d done at the gym had made me stronger stronger than I’d ever been, even in the original timeline–and I had to rely on that strength now.

David’s hands shot out, reaching for me, but I deflected his grasp, knocking his arms aside. Before he could react, I drove my fist into his gut. He staggered back, reeling 

But it only made him angrier. 

His movements were chaotic and unpredictable. I managed to fend him off for a time, but it quickly became clear that, despite my newfound strength and training, David’s desperation made him a formidable opponent. 

I landed a few more blows, but nothing took him down. 

Then he got his arm around me. 

His forearm pressed hard against my throat, lifting me off my feet. 

Panic set in as my airway constricted, but more than that I felt humiliated. I chose to help Alexander. If Alexander walked out right now and saw me like this, would he be disappointed? Would he lose respect for me? 

I couldn’t let that happen. 

I couldn’t lose his respect now. I had to prove that I was able to defend myself, at least for a few minutes. I was angry with myself for how easily David was overpowering me. I felt weak and pathetic. 

I held onto that feeling, letting it fuel me. I needed to tap into every bit of my strength to win this. 

Trying to pry his arm away was useless. Instead, I drove my elbow into his stomach with all the force I could 

muster. 

David cursed and staggered. His grip loosened–just slightly–but not enough. I wedged my fingers between his arm and my neck, clawing, digging in hard. He let out another curse, but still, he didn’t let go. 

I could hear other voices nearby. Someone was shouting to stop David, to protect me. It had to be Alexander’s men,
