He looked at me for a long moment, blinking slowly as if processing my question. Then, with a small shrug, he nudged me gently so we sat up straight. “I suppose I do owe you an explanation at this point.” 

“An explanation?” I asked, frowning slightly. 

“About my past relationship issues,” Alexander said tightly, his jaw working as if the words tasted bitter. 

“You mean the reason you were so distant for so long?” My voice was soft, careful not to push too hard. 

I’d known there was something buried deep–a kind of romantic trauma that made him feel he couldn’t allow himself to love. But it had always been a sensitive topic, one I hadn’t dared to ask about until now.

“That woman… must have been Sabrina.” His voice softened, tinged with sadness. “She was my first serious relationship.” His lips curved into a bittersweet smile. “I thought I’d marry her someday. But things didn’t turn out that way.” 

“What happened?” I asked gently. 

“Sabrina was Diana’s niece–her brother’s daughter. Since I’m adopted, there wasn’t any blood relation between us. When Diana found out I had a crush on her, she encouraged it. I think she saw it as a way to strengthen her family’s influence within the pack.” His fingers fidgeted with the seam of a cushion, as if grounding himself in the memory. “For a while, things were great. I found out not long after that she’d been seeing someone else–a man from the north. They’d been seeing each other in secret for a while.” His jaw tensed, the betrayal still fresh in his memory. “Sabrina chose him. They’re married now, and I believe they have a child together.” 

I reached for his hand, lacing my fingers through his. “I’m so sorry, Alexander.” 

Before he could respond, a frantic knock at the front door shattered the moment. He looked at me apologetically, then stood to answer it. 

My thoughts were a tangle as I processed everything he’d just told me. When the door opened, August stood there, his posture rigid with urgency. His eyes darted toward me, and for a brief second, an almost angry look flickered across his face. 

“We’ve got trouble in the Roguelands,” August said in a low, clipped voice.
