Charles looked at the top of Sophia’s head, put his arms around her waist and pulled her into his arms with little effort. “If apologizing is useful, why do we need the police?”
Sophia was caught off guard and fell into his embrace. Hearing his steady heartbeat next to her ears, her eyes widened unconsciously and she looked up at him.
“What’s wrong?” Charles saw the astonishment on her face. His eyes flickered, lowered his head naturally and pecked her lips.
His figure was reflected in Sophia’s eyes. She frowned and let go of his hand, wanting to push him away.
But Charles was very strong. The arm that restrained her waist did not move at all and he said instead, “That’s enough. Don’t be angry. If you really like that short evening dress, wear that for me when we get home.”
Sophia was speechless.
She looked back at Leah’s unpleasant expression that could not be concealed, pursed her lips, and her hands that were on Charles’ chest trying to push him away just now, wound around his neck instead.
“Sure.”
Leah looked at the two embracing each other and could no longer maintain the smile on her face.
She coughed softly and said, “I empathize with Charles. Miss Lawrence can be… too much. If Charles is dissatisfied with her and wants to do something about it, I won’t stop it.”
“It’s not that you won’t stop it, but rather, you hope that he’ll do something, right?” Sophia leaned into Charles’ embrace, her entire body tightly wound up, but she still looked at Leah with a sweet smile. “But I’m afraid I’ll have to disappoint you. Charles and I are very magnanimous and won’t pursue the things that Miss Lawrence has done.”
Leah bit her lips dejectedly, “I just wanted to apologize on behalf of Miss Lawrence. Why are you saying it like…”
She smiled bitterly and did not finish her sentence.
“Sophia White, stop putting words into other people’s mouths!” William looked at Sophia nestled in Charles’ arms and could not wait to drag her out of it. “Leah is kind enough to apologize to you on behalf of Tiffany. What kind of attitude is that?”
Leah pulled at his sleeve and said bitterly, “Will, say no more. It’s Miss Lawrence’s fault anyway.”
“It’s her fault, so why should you take the blame for it?” William retorted, turning his head to glare at the unrepentant Sophia, wondering if he was feeling more anger or jealousy.
“The marriage between the Harris’ and Jones’ families has already been decided by the elders. Sophia, do you really want to become the third party and be scorned by everyone?”
Sophia had heard a lot of things much worse than this. She smiled at William and nestled deeper into Charles’ arms, deliberately saying, “It’s just a political marriage between the big families. Charles doesn’t even like Miss Jones. Speaking of which, the relationship between Charles and me has been very good. It’s Miss Jones who has intervened between us instead.”
She said that to William, but she was looking at Leah when she said it. When she saw the latter’s smile was not as perfect as always, the grin on her mouth became broader.
That was the outcome she aimed for!
“Sophia, you… you’re shameless!” William clenched his fists and the veins on his neck popped.
Charles had been looking down at Sophia all the time. When he heard that, he raised his eyes which had turned cold, “Mr. Jones should speak more carefully.”
“Am I wrong?” William snorted. “Hugging a casual woman in front of your official fiancée. Does Mr. Harris think the Jones family can be bullied?”
Charles stared cold daggers at William. “Then, does Mr. Jones think I can be bullied?”
“Will, stop it.” Leah sighed softly, looked at Charles and Sophia bitterly and turned her wheelchair around. “The wedding is about to start. Let’s go.”
William stood motionless and Leah pleaded, “Will, just… leave me some dignity.”
