Sophia turned around and stared at her. Her mouth opened several times, but no words came out.
“Let’s go to the stairwell and talk. It’s a bit inconvenient here.” Nicole suggested after checking the surroundings.
Sophia nodded and followed her to the stairwell.
Footsteps echoed in the stairwell. It sounded like there were people going in and out of the stairwell downstairs.
“Nicole, those chat records…” Sophia could barely sleep the entire night. It was not until the early morning hours when she finally dozed off, but even in her sleep, this was the only thing she could think about.
On one side, she talked about how Charles had forced her mother into her deathbed, and on another side, Nicole told her that Charles was being accused by someone… When she woke up the next morning, her head was pounding.
Nicole pulled a phone out and handed it to her.
“Was this Mom’s?” Sophia took it from her.
“Yeah. I found it when I was going through Mom’s belongings. I came across those chat records. Your brother was furious and hired a hacker to investigate this person.
“We met up with this person after coming back from Bamboo Virtues Village. He told us that he did it under Mr. Harris’ orders. He even showed us a bank transaction between him and Mr. Harris.
“We had someone look into that as well, and it’s confirmed that the account belongs to Mr. Harris. In fact, it’s his personal bank account that he only uses for personal purposes,” Nicole said warily.
Sophia licked her lips. Her legs felt like they were turning into jelly.
How was this possible?
She leaned against the wall behind her. “Nicole, this… This still doesn’t prove that Charles was the one who did it. For all we know, someone might have used his card.”
“Did you fall for him again?” Nicole asked.
“This has nothing to do with my feelings for him,” Sophia replied, “Charles isn’t involved with Mom in any way at all, so he has no reason to do this anyway. Someone might just be accu…”
Before she could finish her sentence, footstep sounds neared as an excited shrill voice of a woman sounded, “Sophia’s here! Come here everyone, I found Sophia!”
Lisa suddenly appeared at the stairwell door.
Then, there were sounds of chaotic footsteps as around seven or eight reporters rushed over. They blocked the stairwell entrance and were followed by several photographers standing behind them. They were pointing their cameras at Sophia.
The camera flashes were so bright that Sophia could barely open her eyes. All she could hear were the reporters throwing questions one after another.
“Ms. White, you caused your mother to slit her wrist and commit suicide, and your father is now in the hospital because of you. How can you explain this?”
“Leah Jones slit her wrist and attempted suicide. In the suicide note she left, she mentioned that she hopes you would stop pushing her brother. What do you know about this?”
“How do you feel about the White Industries’ market plunge? You and your brother know nothing about business management, and now that Mr. White has been admitted to the hospital, what will happen to White Industries?”
“Ms. Lisa Swift here says that she’s a relative of the White family but has always been treated as a maid. Not only has she lost her dignity, but she has to endure your family’s beatings and scoldings. Is this true?”
“The Harris and Jones families canceled their wedding arrangements, and so did the Jones and Sommer families earlier this year. Did all this happen because of you? There are also rumors that you are officially together with Mr. Harris, yet you’re still having a secret affair with Mr. Jones. Are these mere groundless rumors or is there truth to it?”
Sophia raised one hand to cover her eyes from the blinding flash. It felt as if there was a bunch of bees buzzing around her ears. She was extremely annoyed.
However, there was nothing she could say. She knew that anything she said would be twisted and misinterpreted into stories.
“There’s no more room behind me, excuse me.” Sophia had one hand covering her eyes and the other around her stomach protectively as she tried to find her way out.
She was standing right before a flight of steps and did not want to be pushed down.
