James was pushed out of the operating room with the doctor and nurses beside him as he laid in the gurney with his eyes closed. He looked extremely weak and frail, unlike the vigorous White Industries’ president who once rode on the crest of success.

“How is he?” Sophia asked.

“The operation was a success. He just needs to stay another week so we can see if there are any signs of the body rejecting the organ. If not, he’ll be cleared to return home and just has to remember to take his medication regularly.”

“Thank you very much.” Sophia finally felt relieved.

After this heart transplant, Dad’s heart should be fine from now on.

“No worries, it’s our job.” Then, the doctor let out a heavy sigh as he continued. “The person you should thank is the heart donor. He slipped and fell to his death at a construction site during work and the company is refusing to pay for compensation… Moreover, his father’s a migrant worker. Anyhow, it’s just a difficult time.”

“Is there any way I can contact him?” Although her father might be free of all his previous cardiac problems, someone else had lost a life…

The doctor shook his head. “I don’t have a contact method, but he’s just in room 1423 now. You can try your luck and head over.”

Sophia thanked the doctor once again and headed out to buy a bouquet of flowers with Nicole. Then, they made their way to room 1423.

As they passed by the corridors, there were patients lying in gurneys throughout the way. Most of them were just staring blankly into the air. Though they were technically alive, they just seemed better off dead.

Some were accompanied by their loved ones with gloomy expressions, whereas some were in their bed all alone with nobody beside them.

There was an empty bed toward the left of ward 1423’s entrance. There was a large bloodstain on the sheets and a dark-skinned migrant worker sat right beside it.

He was wearing a construction site uniform that was stained with soil and blood all over. His face was covered with streaks of tears.

Sophia held the bouquet of flowers before him. Although she had already planned her words and thank you speech as she made her way over, she could barely squeak out a word at the moment as she stared at him.

The migrant worker turned to look at her and wiped away the tears on his face. He spoke first, “Hey, it’s you again, my hero! What are you doing here?”

Nicole glanced at Sophia.

Sophia paused to think for a while, remembering her previous birthday gift that was cashed out and donated to migrant workers. She had bumped into this very migrant worker once at the hospital in the past. She remembered that he even knelt down on the floor to thank her.

“... Your son was the one who passed away?”

The worker wiped away another tear and choked up. “My little boy! He had just gotten into university and wanted to earn some money for his tuition fees, so he came back this winter holiday to work with me at the site!”

“I tried to talk him out, but he refused, so I brought him… Along… Who would have thought the construction site’s scaffolding was not secured, so he fell down. He was sent to the hospital but… We didn’t have… The money to save… So… He’s gone now…”

He covered his face with his callused hands and began sobbing.

An unpleasant feeling rose in her chest. “I’m sorry for your loss.”

The migrant worker cried on for a while before stopping. “I know that people can’t come back from death, but I just don’t know how to tell his mother! He… He was all fine when he came, and now…”

He was sobbing so hard that he could barely speak anymore.

Nicole grabbed her purse and pulled out a few pieces of tissue paper, then handed them to him.

Once he had calmed down slightly, Sophia comforted him for a while before finally telling him, “Your son donated his heart to my father. Thank you very much.”

She gave me a 90-degree bow as she thanked him graciously.

The man immediately got up and pulled her up. “No, you shouldn’t thank me! This is your good karma getting back to you! You helped me once the last time, and now my son has helped your father. I guess your kindness has been… Reciprocated…”

Although he meant well, he still choked up as he continued. “It’s all that damn manager’s fault! He bought cheap, crappy scaffolding just to save money, this… He doesn’t even care about a human’s life!”
