Sophia stood with her back against Nicole in the corridor as she stared at the scenery outside through the window.
“Are you not planning to leave Mr. Harris?” Nicole walked to her side and watched the scenery outside. “Dad is already treating you so badly now, imagine if he finds out that Mr. Harris is involved in this…”
She did not continue.
“I already gave it a good thought. I don’t believe that Charles would do something like this. Anyway, he’s coming by to pick me up later, so please don’t talk about this anymore, Nicole,” Sophia said with a frown.
Nicole gave her a wary look. After a long pause, she replied, “Alright, just think about it. The kids are still at home, I have to go now.”
“Alright.” Sophia wanted to say more, but as soon as the words came to her mouth, she swallowed them back down and merely nodded her head.
Nicole gently patted her shoulder and turned to leave.
The weather was nice today. There were no signs of clouds in the azure blue sky, and even the sun felt warmer than usual. However, Sophia’s heart was the exact opposite. Her thoughts were a mess and she felt as if gloomy clouds were casting down upon her head.
She could not care less about what her father thought of her, but what about Ster?
If Nicole told Ster that Charles was somehow related to Mom’s suicide, would he still treat her the same?
Before she even thought about Ster, what about herself? If Charles truly had a hand in prompting Mom to commit suicide, could she go against her guilty conscience and stay with him?
“What are you doing out here? Aren’t you cold?” Charles’ voice came from behind.
Knowing that it would take half an hour to travel from the office to the hospital, Sophia just realized that she had been standing here for a very long time.
She finally recollected her thoughts and turned around to face him. “Nope, let’s go.”
Charles’ eyes paused on her flushed hands as he frowned slightly. He walked up to her and held her hands in his to warm them up, then he gently blew on her hands.
“You silly girl, couldn’t you have looked for a warmer spot to wait for me?” After making sure that she was warmed up, he tucked her hands into his coat pockets and began walking toward the elevator.
Although Sophia’s hands felt warm now, her heart still felt chilly. “The room was too stuffy, so I came out to take a breather.”
“Your leg hasn’t fully recovered, don’t hang about somewhere cold.” Charles touched her hand in his pocket and looked down at her. “Does your other hand still feel cold?”
Not at all. He had just warmed them up mere seconds ago.
However, Sophia still stopped in her tracks and raised her other hand. “Yes.”
Charles looked at her for a long while before sighing. Then, he proceeded to take off his coat and draped it over her shoulders.
The heat from his body that strayed on the coat along with the mild scent of his cologne oddly made her feel at ease. Sophia slid her hands into the sleeves and hesitated slightly before pulling his hand into the pockets.
The two of them got into the elevator. Charles circled Sophia in his arms to avoid her bumping into the crowd.
Sophia looked up at him and noticed the shadow cast beneath his luscious lashes. His lips were pursed tightly, seemingly trying to restrain himself.
After being with him for so many years, she knew well that he hated other people’s touch…
Ding!
The elevator arrived at their floor.
Charles got out of the elevator with Sophia still in his arms. Before they walked out, she could hear several women whispering about them.
“What a good-looking couple, they look perfect together!”
“They’ll certainly have beautiful babies! Ah, why can’t I be their child?”
