Chapter 5
The walk to Gamma Abel’s office feels longer than it should, mouly because my brain won’t shut up
Why am I doing this again?
I’m halfway down the hall when the answer hits me guilt. Stupid, nagging, bleeding–heart guilt.
It doesn’t matter that I don’t know who Enoch really is. It doesn’t matter that his aura practically screams danger, even with the amnesia. Nope. My conscience has decided I’m responsible for him, which is just great.
“He’ll leave when his wound heals, and his memory comes back,” I mutter under my breath. “That’s the deal. Taryn. You’re not running a charity.”
The sound of raised voices spills out of Gamma Abel’s office as I approach. I slow my steps, my stomach sinking when I recognize Kallias’s sharp tone.

I roll my eyes. Of course, Kallias is throwing a fit
When I step into the office, he’s pacing like a caged animal, his hands gesturing wildly as he rants. Gamma Abel, on the other hand, looks like he’s two seconds away from throwing himself out the window.
“Gamma,” Kallias says, slamming his hands down on the desk. “This is a risk we can’t afford to take.”
The Gamma doesn’t respond. He just rubs his temples, muttering something under his breath that sounds a lot like a prayer for patience.
I’ll handle it,” Gamma Abel finally says, his tone weary.
“No need,” I chime in, stepping fully into the room. “I’m already here.”
Kallias spins around, his blue eyes narrowing when they land on me. “You-”
“Hi, I interrupt, brushing past him to stand in front of Camma Abel’s desk.
“Perfect timing,” the Gamma mutters, rubbing his temples. “We were just talking about you.”
“Always a pleasure,” I say dryly, sliding into the room.
Kallias turns to me, all sharp edges and fury. “Get that rogue out. Now”
I ignore him, planting myself in front of the Gamma’s desk. “Enoch’s my boyfriend.”
The room falls silent. For a second, I think I’ve pulled it off. Then Kallias laughs, sharp and mean. “Boyfriend: That’s the best you’ve got?”
“Jealous?” I shoot back, tilting my head.
He steps closer, his jaw ticking. “You’re delusional if you think anyone’s buying that.”
“Taryn,” Gamma Abel is clearly stressed now. “Please tell me you have a logical explanation for all of this.”
“I do, I say, smiling sweetly. “Ha, let’s hear it,” Kallias chuckles to himself.
I ignore him, turning my full attention to Gammabel. “He ran away from his p

Camma Abel looks suspicious. Kallias looks like he wants to punch something–probably me.

Kallias barks out a laugh. “The Midnight Pack doesn’t have rogues. Try again, Taryn
“Oh, shut up, Kallias,” I snap, spinning to lace him. “Not everyone runs their pack like a dictatorship.”
“Enough,” Gamma Abel says, cutting through our banter. He eyes me for a long moment, his brow furrowed. “Is this true, Taryn

Gamma Abel sighs, rubbing his temples again. “Taryn
The Gamma leans back in his chair, giving me the kind of look that says I don’t get paid enough for this shit. “You sure about this?”
I nod, pulling out my best wide–eyed, tragic expression. “He loves me, Gamma. He couldn’t stay away. And considering my track record with relationships-“I glance pointedly at Kallias. “You owe me one.
Gamma Abel sighs, long and heavy, like he’s got the weight of the world on his shoulders. “Fine. I’ll inform the Alpha and Luna, but this is on you, Taryn. One wrong move, and he’s out.”
“Understood,” I say, already turning to leave.
“Not so fast,” Kallias snaps, stepping in front of me. “This isn’t over. My parents won’t allow it.”
Gamma Abel’s expression hardens, his murmur becomes low and dangerous. “Accepting pack members is my jurisdiction, Kallias. If you go behind my back on this, you’ll be directly challenging my authority,”
The airin the room spikes, but Kallias doesn’t argue. Instead, he storms out, slamming the door behind him so hard the
walls shake.
I wait a beat, then wipe a fake tear from my cheek. “Thanks, Gamma. You’re the best.”

He grumbles something that sounds suspiciously like, “You’re lucky I’m fond of you,” as I slip out of the office.
The backyard is unusually noisy as I make my way outside, the sound of murmured voices drawing my attention. A crowd. of pack members is gathered near the fountain, their backs turned to me as they stare at something–or someone–in the
center.
“What the hell now?” I mutter, pushing my way through.
My stomach twists as I push through the crowd, shoving past bodies until I reach the front.
Enoch.
When I break through the circle, my stomach twists. Enoch’s in the center, soaked in what looks–and smells–like mop water. Kallias’s friends are surrounding him, smirking as one of them kicks at his leg and his bandaged stomach

“Who the hell is that one of them m
“He doesn’t even have the Riverstone Pack mark, another adds, his tone laced with disgust.
Enoch doesn’t react. He just crouches there, one arm shielding his face, the other bracing himself on the ground. His expression is blank, numb, like he doesn’t even register the pain.
My hand flies to my mouth, a gasp escaping before I can stop it.
“Stop it!” I shout, stepping forward.
All eyes snap to me, the crowd parting slightly as the group of bullies turns to face me.
“What are you gonna do about it, Omega?” one of them sneers.
Something snaps inside me. I don’t think I just move.
“You’re about to find out,” I growl, stepping towards the bullies and Enoch,
Enoch’s eyes flicker up to meet mine from afar, and for the first time, I see something in them.
A spark
I shove through the last row of onlookers as the last of Kallias‘ friends leaves. I barely register their murmurs, and drop to my knees in front of him.
“Enoch.” I whisper, my voice cracking. My hands tremble as I reach out to him, wiping mop water off his face like it’ll somehow undo the humiliation. It doesn’t, of course. He’s drenched, his hair plastered to his forehead, dirt streaking his jaw. He looks up at me, his expression blank, detached, like he doesn’t even feel the kicks that are still landing on his ribs.
“What’s wrong?” His voice is so calm it almost sounds curious, like he’s asking about the weather.
I freeze, my throat tightening.
“Why are you crying?” he asks, tilting his head slightly, as if I’m some puzzle he’s trying to solve.
I laugh, though it comes out shaky. “I’m not crying. Something just–uh–went in my eye.”
Enoch stares at me, unimpressed.
Then, in that same neutral, detached tone, he asks, “Should I just kill them all?”
The atmosphere turns deadly in an instant. The murmurs from the crowd falter, replaced by an oppressive silence. It’s the same pressure that made Kallias step back in the infirmary hallway, the kind of dominance that makes your wolf want to roll over and bare its throat.
I’m beginning to think what kind of man exactly have I let into our pack?
It’s not just his words–it’s how he’s saying it–the raw authority radiating from him. My chest tightens, my instincts screaming to submit. I don’t know what monster he is, but he’s a force no one should dare challenge.
“No,” I say, sharper than I intend. His head tilts further, like he’s studying me. “You don’t think like that. Ever.”
He says nothing, just watches as I stand and grab his arm. “Come on, we’re going back to the room.”
He blinks at me, completely unbothered.
I turn to the crowd, glaring at the pack members si loitering like vultures. “What the hell is wrong with all of you?” I snap.
