Hearing Aaron’s oh-so-obvious denial, Serena couldn’t help but laugh even harder.

“Aaron, this is Northspire, not Alderburg. You don’t get to make the rules here!” she shot back.

She had been a little disheartened when she realized Abby had lied to her, but now that Aaron was trying to control things, she was more determined than ever to win first place.

Aaron watched Serena, stubborn as ever, and his brow furrowed. “Do you always have to contradict me?”

“Who’s contradicting whom?” Serena’s voice was icy. “I wanted a life with you, but you couldn’t see past Cynthia Lynwood. Now that I’ve finally let you go, you won’t leave me alone. Aaron, don’t you think this is a little pathetic?”

Aaron’s scowl deepened. He rubbed his forehead, then looked up at Serena, enunciating each word: “You really won’t drop out of the competition?”

“No, I won’t.”

“Fine.” Aaron stood up, his gaze steely. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

With that, he swept out of the room.

Serena watched him go, her smile dropping the moment the door closed behind him.

That was Aaron for you. He claimed he didn’t care about Cynthia Lynwood, yet here he was, trying to push Serena out of the competition for Cynthia’s sake.

How ironic.

Serena gathered her things and headed home.

As she reached the entrance to her apartment complex, she spotted a sleek Lamborghini parked outside. Her mood instantly lifted.

She walked up and tapped on the window.

It slid down to reveal William’s handsome face.

A smile tugged at Serena’s lips. “You’re here early.”

“Wrapped up work and came right over. You’re back sooner than I thought. Hop in.”

“Mm-hmm.” Serena opened the door and climbed in.

“The trial’s in a few days. Are you nervous?” William asked as she settled in.
