Aaron was ready for her—he lifted his hand and easily caught Serena’s ankle before she could kick him.

“If you want to land a hit on me, you’ll need to bulk up first.”

Serena, annoyed, tried to yank her leg free, but Aaron’s grip only tightened.

Just then, the door creaked open.

Both of them turned to look. To their surprise, it was William standing in the doorway. Serena’s eyes narrowed, and she hurriedly pulled her leg back.

Aaron’s gaze darkened, a mocking smirk curling at his lips. “Does Mr. Grayson have a knack for showing up unannounced, or does he just have a sixth sense for these things?”

William’s expression was unreadable, but Serena shot Aaron a frosty glare. Her tone was icy: “Aaron, could you try not to be so obnoxious for once?”

Aaron’s face turned stony. As he looked up, he caught the faintest hint of a smile flickering across William’s lips. The sight made Aaron’s chest tighten; his eyes grew colder, and he pressed his lips into a thin, unmoving line.

William finally turned his attention to Serena, his voice softer than she’d ever heard it. “The show aired today. I went to your place to find you, but you weren’t there. The neighbors told me you’d been taken to the hospital, so I hurried over.”

As he spoke, he shot a pointed glance at Aaron.

William’s tone was calm and casual, but the truth was he’d mobilized everyone he could to track Serena down. This was Northspire, not Aaron’s territory.

Even so, it had taken some work to find her. Which meant Aaron had wasted no time building his own network here, quietly establishing influence.

Serena, still foggy from the past few days, only now remembered the show’s premiere. Not wanting the tension in the room to linger, she spotted the TV hanging on the wall.

“William, would you mind turning on the TV for me?”

“Of course.”

William started to wheel himself toward the TV stand, but before he got far, a sudden blur of motion brushed past him. Sensing what was happening, he sped up, reaching for the remote. His fingers closed around it—only to realize Aaron’s hand was gripping the other end.
