Riley hadn’t expected Allen to propose to her.

“Riley…” Allen hadn’t expected this. He thought he’d said everything that needed to be said, and yet, she still rejected him. “Can you at least tell me why?”

“There’s no reason,” Riley replied, her gaze unwavering as she looked him straight in the eyes. “I just don’t want to marry anymore. I did want to get married before, but I don’t want it now.”

“For the rest of my life, I’d have to revolve everything around them. And when they have their own kids someday, I’d be stuck helping raise them too. Just thinking about it gives me a headache. So, I’ve decided that when we get to Ashbourne, I’ll go to the hospital and terminate the pregnancy.” 

“What did you just say?” Allen shot up from his seat, his voice sharp with disbelief. “That’s a life you’re talking about! You’re the child’s mother. How could you even think of ending it for a reason like that?” 

“It may be a life, but it’s my choice whether it stays or not,” Riley said firmly, her fists clenched. “Let me ask you this, Allen–if this baby didn’t exist, would you still want to marry me?” 

Allen hesitated. 

The question echoed in his mind. He didn’t have an answer, and his silence spoke volumes. Riley saw the hesitation in his eyes and gave a small, bitter smile. “See? It’s the baby you want to take responsibility for, not me. Ask yourself honestly: can you really commit to spending the rest of your life with a woman you don’t love, just for the sake of a child?” 

Before Allen could respond, Riley turned and left the room. 

The air in the room felt suffocating. She needed to get out. 

Stepping into the hallway, she realized she was hungry, so she made her way to the hotel restaurant. She hadn’t expected to run into Suzy there. 

“Boss, you’re hungry too?” Riley asked casually as she slid into the seat across from Suzy, eyeing the table full of food.
