The sight of a diamond only reminded Ben of Jamie, of their love from long ago, and of just how foolish he had been.

Winnie was thrilled. “Thank you so much!”

Ben didn’t respond, but instead leaned close to Jamie’s ear, his words sharp and meant to sting. “When I went with your sister to pick out her wedding jewelry, she insisted on getting gold with the lowest processing fees and even chose a second-hand diamond ring. I remember wondering why she cared so much about saving money. It turns out it was all to help you.”

Jamie’s tears flowed even harder. In that moment, she didn’t know what to say. “Winnie, why do you have to be so good… so foolishly selfless?”

Ben could feel the tremble in her body. It only drove him to mention Winnie more.

“Speaking of, I’ve been meaning to ask, how do you manage to brainwash your sister like that? You’re both sisters, yet your personalities couldn’t be more different. Sometimes she’s so naive, I almost feel guilty about taking advantage of her.”

In truth, he hadn’t crossed any boundaries with Winnie. They hadn’t shared any intimate moments. But Jamie didn’t know that, and whatever her imagination filled in was far worse than anything he actually said.

After what felt like an eternity, Ben finally released her, a look of satisfaction on his face. Adjusting his clothes, he added, “The room Winnie set up for you is right next to ours. Make sure you clean up well tonight, because I’ll be coming by.”

Jamie’s eyes widened in shock. No matter how soundproofed the walls were, it wasn’t going to be enough. Winnie was a light sleeper. Just the stray cries of a cat outside could wake her.

It would be disastrous if she found out.

“You’re insane, Ben,” she muttered, raising her head to look at him with pure loathing.

“You two are sisters, so having her close makes you happy, right?” Ben chuckled softly.

It made him happy, too.

It wasn’t even bedtime yet, but he was already looking forward to the evening’s “entertainment.” Just the thought of Jamie had him intrigued.

Once his hair was dry, Ben didn’t linger, heading straight to his study to work. With some free time on her hands, Winnie went downstairs to find Jamie.

“Jamie, I’ll help you set up the room, so you can head straight to bed later.”
