Grandma frowned and looked at Chase, hoping he’d offer to drive her. But he silently ate his breakfast, ignoring her unspoken request. Ashley lowered her head. Seeing Chase’s reluctance, Grandma didn’t push it.

Of course, Ashley had no business lunch. She’d said that to avoid riding with Chase and to avoid inconveniencing him.

The day passed without incident. Ashley stayed at the office, working late until 9 pm, then drove herself home. To her surprise, Chase was already there. He usually came home much later unless

Ashley froze. Although they shared a bedroom, the left side of the bed was Chase’s space, and she rarely went there. Similarly, the right side was hers, and he respected that boundary. Their personal belongings–wallets, watches, toiletries–were always kept separate and organized. There was no chance he’d misplaced this booklet.

She approached the vanity. It was a deed. Her heart leaped with a guess. She opened it. It was for the house across the street from her uncle’s, the deed clearly showing her name as the sole owner.
