He looked at her.“Okay, I’ll ask next time.” 

Next time? She doubted they would have another opportunity for forced cohabitation. He returned to his reading, then commented, “Your annotations are quite good.” It was a compliment. But Ashley ignored it, grabbing her hairdryer. After drying her hair, he was still reading. After her skincare routine, she lay down on her side of the bed. He didn’t go to sleep immediately; she didn’t know when he did, because she fell asleep quickly. The next morning, she woke early, as the sun was rising. The other side of the bed was empty. The room was quiet. He was gone. He’d left early… Perhaps he hadn’t slept in the room at all. She had arranged to meet Mark at the office. After breakfast, she packed and left. As she opened the door, she heard Sam in the hall.“Aunt Wu is so mean! She said she’d sleep with me last night, but she went back to her own room in the middle of the night!” 

She was complaining to the housekeeper. Ashley concluded Chase hadn’t slept with her, but with Tanya. They couldn’t even last a night…
