That day, Ashley stayed at Marshall’s, playing Go and drinking tea with him. Sam wanted her to return to Chase’s villa with him that evening. In the afternoon, Ashley texted Chase, asking him to pick Sam up. He didn’t reply, and she assumed he hadn’t seen the message. 

After dinner, Chase’s driver came to pick Sam up. After Sam left, Ashley departed from Marshall’s mansion. 

Emily’s birthday was next week, and Ashley had decided not to attend. Amanda thought it was the best. That evening, they called Emily. 

Emily hadn’t finished dinner when she answered Ashley’s call. Her leg had mostly healed, and she could walk normally. Glancing at Chase, she left the dining room and answered the phone cheerfully.“Ashley, my dear, have you had dinner?” 

“Yes, Grandma.” Ashley put the phone on speaker. After some pleasantries, she explained, “Grandma, I’m sorry, but my grandma and I won’t be able to attend your birthday party.” 

Emily had already guessed that. While disappointed, she understood. She smiled. “That’s alright, my dear. But don’t let this distance us, okay? Call me whenever you’re free. If you need anything, feel free to tell me. I’ll see what I can do. We’re still family. Alright?” 

Ashley said, “I know, Grandma. Thank you.” 

They chatted for a bit longer before hanging up. 

Because of Emily’s birthday, Lily had returned to the mansion the previous day. Jake was also there. Lily had just asked about Chase and Ashley, and Jake learned they were still in the process of divorcing. Ashley had a close bond with Emily. Logically, since the divorce wasn’t finalized, she should attend the birthday party. But…

Emily glanced at Chase, who remained impassive, before replying, “She apologized and said she won’t be able to come to my birthday celebration.” 

Noticing what Emily meant, Chase reacted calmly and tried to serve her a piece of fish. Emily moved her bowl with anger.
