Damien felt like he had heard wrongly. It's been three minutes since he heard the screeching and nothing came after that. He felt like perhaps it was the call from other birds, even though he had every reason to doubt that stance.
He decided not to wait for the rest of the Batsquatches. He could make good use of the interval he had been availed before he gets back to business.
He flipped the system window out. One of the things that still bothered him was what he was doing on the island. How the hell did he suddenly get there? He wouldn't find the answer unless he goes through the system.
He began to scroll through. All the new tasks and their rewards were locked. He couldn't see past the big virtual padlock which sealed the content away from his mortal eyes. No matter how hard he tried he couldn't get the answer.
He tapped on the task which he was presently carrying out. It showed,
[1/5 taken out.]
"Even the rewards are locked."
He remonstrated. Then he realised that he was wasting his time on something else; he should be worried about how he got there and not what rewards he would get.
He even had no idea when the rest of the Batsquatches would catch up with him.
Then suddenly he noticed an icon beeping at the far corner of the right hand of the system. He tapped on it.
[Update on System's Random Tasks.]
"System random tasks?"
He had no idea why he had to repeat what was obvious. Perhaps he was finding it hard to understand.
He tapped on the other icon which popped up and he read the instructions which displayed immediately. He read it out loudly,
"Host would occasionally be assigned tasks against his wills. Host should grow to adapt this sudden change. The location or activities of the host would not matter when the system calls for his need. To keep the system running, Host would have to keep wading off and fighting off monsters of different breeds and species. Getting a system opens a portal. Keeping the system calls for bravery."
Damien paused for a while after reading all this. That would be the first lengthy information the system had ever given to him. He could had never thought that the system could be that detailed.
Then he realised that that wasn't really his concern. He had something more interesting to worry about.
"This will happen often to keep the system? And I don't have choice?"
He tried to break the words to particles.
"But shouldn't the system give me a heads up? I mean, how could you just do whatever you want? Huh? How could you?"
He was asking a question which he didn't need an answer to. He looked around him, away from the system.
"This is real trouble. Keeping this system is real trouble."
He looked back at the system.
"Why should I keep this system? I have enough money. At least I have couple investments that would keep me rich for life. Why should I keep the system?"
That was an interesting question which he had never given a life to. It was quite interesting that he allowed himself to think of it, it was as though there was an obvious point which he had been missing all along.
"If I let go of the system... if there is a way to do that..."
He sighed, thinking of a way to carry on with his thoughts.
"I wouldn't have to worry about any other thing... I am already rich. Money is power in this world."
Something quite puzzling struck him at that moment. Something which he couldn't ignore or pretend not to be mindful of. It was more important than the idea of shedding the system as though it was some overused skin.
"What would be the consequence of letting it go? Will I be harmed? Will my unborn child be harmed... how about Jada... Evelyn and the rest of the girls."
He pursed his lips, his eyes getting darker.
"Letting go means I don't have to worry about that creep that said he would come for me when I am at the peak of life. I'm not even sure what he has in mind or what he is capable of. He doesn't look like someone from this era."
At that moment, factual stances began to dawn at him. Facts that were conspicuous and choking.
