MAEVE LILY...
As soon as I walked out of the apartment building, my phone vibrated. It's a text from Joe.
'Hey Lily, good to hear from you. Currently, I am a bit caught up in work. We can meet next Sunday at lunchtime in the 'Sunshine' cafe down the lane.'
'Sure, then see you this Sunday.' I hit the send button and shoved the phone in my pocket before entering my car.

I looked at the proud mansion in front of me. The place of my stepmother. I am a bit sceptical though have no choice.
Inhaling a deep breath, I got out of the car and went inside the mansion. Guards did not stop me, or more did not bother about me.
I rang the door bell and the head housekeeper opened the door. "Hi, Miss Rosy. Are Mom and Dad at home?"
Miss Rosy moved her gaze all over me, before stepping out. I am already aware of their dislike toward me, still, I am here burying the sense of shamelessness.
I followed her inside. Both my stepmom and dad were sitting in the hall room. As soon as I entered, their attention fell over me and my father immediately stood up in surprise. I have stepped into this place after one year since Grandma was hospitalised.
"Maeve, what a surprise?" Dad came closer. "You are here to see your parents?"
Well, marvellous acting dad. But sorry, it's non-paid and went in vain. "Hi, dad."
Sigh... I turned to Ruby, my stepmother. She was sitting on the couch graciously, staring at me.
"I don't have any intention to disrupt your peace. I only have one request." I spoke slowly, not really sure how to continue.
Ruby leaned forward, lips curved into a smirk, "Interesting... Rebellious one now have a request?" She arched a brow. "Let's hear it."
My eyes lowered. "My grandmother is hospitalised, fighting her life. During this time, I managed her medications and bills. But..." I gulped hard recalling the doctor's words, "She needed urgent surgery now and I need a good amount of money for her operation."
My head lowered more, "Pl-ease, help me..." My tone turned heavy.
"How much?" I heard her arrogant tone. She is enjoying my hardship.
"170 thousand dollars," I muttered.
"Hmm, Interesting..." Her voice pulled my eyes up at her. She smirked at me again but her blue eyes spoke differently. "And you want me to pay for your grandmother?"
"Ple-ease, Mom..." I blinked, fighting my tears from slipping. "Pl-ease, help me."
"Help?" She laughed. "Did you ever see that much of dollars in your life? Or do you think money is easy to get, huh?"
"Ple-ease, Mom..." I pleaded again. "I beg you, please save grandma." Tears finally slipped. "I promise I will do anything you ask for, just save grandma."
She laughed again. "I see how it is, Lily. I thought you accused me of your mother's murder a few years ago. Now, you want to be my slave?"
