Lucas looked rattled by Connor’s words. “Connor, what’s even the point of pretending anymore? Why don’t we just tell her the truth and let her decide?”

Connor raised an eyebrow, caught off guard. Lucas didn’t seem worried at all. Where did he get that kind of confidence?

But Connor just shrugged. “You want to tell her? Not happening.”

He remembered the time he’d tried to test Chloe, calling her his wife just to see what she’d do. She completely freaked out. Throwing the truth at her out of nowhere would only make her panic and push back. If she was going to see who Lucas really was, she had to figure it out on her own.

Connor had just finished washing up when he went to open the door.

Chloe stood in the hallway, worry written all over her face. As soon as she saw Connor, she asked, “How’s my husband?”

Lucas broke the silence first. “Babe, I’m sorry. I lost it last night—I shouldn’t have pushed you.”

Chloe stayed quiet, clearly not wanting to talk about it. Instead, she just asked, “Are you sure you’re okay?”

Lucas nodded. “I’m fine. This pain is nothing compared to what I went through a few days ago.”

Chloe caught his words. “‘What you went through a few days ago’? What happened?”

Lucas hesitated, then said, “Could you shut the door?”

Chloe got up and closed it. Finally, Lucas looked at her. “Rose, there’s something I need to tell you.”
