Chloe studied his face, noticing how serious he looked.

A bad feeling started to build in her chest. She couldn’t ignore how strange Lucas had been acting these past few days.

“What is it you want to say?” she asked quietly.

Lucas took a deep breath. “I can’t keep it from you any longer, Rose. We’re not safe. Not at all.”

Chloe’s brow furrowed. “What are you talking about?”

He looked her right in the eyes. “Do you remember why we came to Japan in the first place?”

“You said we had no choice,” Chloe replied, her voice uncertain. “You told me some powerful guy drove us out—someone dangerous, someone who made it impossible for us to stay.”

Lucas hesitated, then said, “Connor is that man.”

Chloe stared at him, completely stunned. “What are you saying?”

He repeated, slower this time, “Connor is the reason we lost everything. He’s the one who forced us to leave, and these past few days, he’s been keeping me prisoner.”

Chloe instinctively shook her head. She just couldn’t believe it.

“Mr. Connor doesn’t seem like that kind of person,” she said, her voice almost steady. She hadn’t spent much time with Connor, but he always came across as polite and thoughtful, a real gentleman. The way he carried himself—so refined, almost regal.

And there was always something sad about him. She could feel it, a kind of quiet pain that made her want to reach out and comfort him. She knew, deep down, that this man had been through something. She saw it in his eyes.

Lucas noticed her disbelief and looked defeated, but he didn’t argue. Instead, he pulled out his phone and tapped on a video.

It looked like security footage, grainy and shaky.

Chloe recognized the place right away—it was the rooftop of the Disney hotel where they’d stayed just days ago.
