Jeffery was all about getting things done quickly. He stood up and said, “Since everyone voted for Claire, I’m announcing that, starting today, Claire is the new Ms. Claire of Sartori Corporation. Plus, I’m transferring ten percent of my shares to her.”

Claire had this subtle smile on her face the whole time, like she knew something no one else did. And then, that smile grew wider.

Out of nowhere, Connor started clapping. It was a bit weird, but everyone joined in anyway, offering their congrats to Claire.

Claire got up and first turned to Jeffery, “Dad, thanks for believing in me. I promise I won’t let you down.” Then she walked over to Connor, “Connor, sorry about this.”

Connor stood up and said, “Congrats, big sis.” But Claire’s smile had a hint of sarcasm in it, “Come on, you don’t have to pretend it doesn’t sting. There’s no one here but us.”

Connor just smiled back, looking like he meant it, “I knew this would happen, so I went ahead and got a celebration cake ready for you.” With a snap of his fingers, the meeting room door swung open.

Teddy rolled in with a cart full of plates, each holding a slice of cake. He didn’t waste time, setting a plate in front of everyone.

Diego’s face turned pale when he saw his — 2020829. He was visibly shaken, his hand trembling as he held his spoon. Edward had a different set, 079246. Every plate was different, no pattern to the numbers, but it was clear they meant something, something unsettling.

Not everyone had numbers, though. Chloe, Jeffery, Diana — their plates were blank. But all the board members who voted for Claire had numbers.

Connor watched them closely, ready to leave once the cake was done. But just as he stood, Diego, who had been all-in for Claire, blurted out, “Ms. Claire, I messed up. I meant to vote for Mr. Connor.”
