Chloe spotted Taylor in the room too. It turned out she was there because she happened to be on a date with Connor when he called Isaac, so she tagged along.
Taylor, still a student, was easily embarrassed. When Isaac teased her, her cheeks flushed red. “Isaac, who’s having a baby with you?” she retorted, still blushing as she moved over to Chloe.
“Congrats, Chloe! I just called my brother, and he said he's already on his way.” Taylor knew about Chloe and Grant’s situation, so she was eager to tell Grant the news. But to her surprise, when she called him, he already knew, and his tone was frosty.
Just as Taylor finished talking, they heard a knock at the door. Connor went to open it and found Grant standing there, with Maddie and Edgar right behind him.
Edgar rushed over, exclaiming, “Chloe, you went into labor early! I was worried sick, but I’m so relieved you’re okay.” He sat beside Chloe’s bed and gently poked the baby’s cheek. “What a cutie! Let me babysit for a couple of days, and I promise to return them if they start crying.”
Grant approached too, giving the baby a quick glance before focusing on Chloe. “Are you feeling okay? Any dizziness?”
Chloe chuckled. “You’re asking the same questions Connor just did,” she said, reassuringly. “I’m fine, no dizziness or anything. Really, I’m good.”
Grant nodded. “Still, your hormones have dropped suddenly, so it's a risky time. Be careful.”
Chloe nodded back. “Got it, thanks.”
Grant’s gaze was sharp and cold. “Don’t tell me you didn’t meddle.”
Maddie laughed softly, her smile giving nothing away. “Of course not. You know I’m set on winning over Connor. Why would I help him have a kid? Nobody wants to be a stepmom for no good reason, right?”
She continued, “I know you had plans set up at Central Hospital. You wanted a staged brain aneurysm, a double tragedy, and a fake-death escape when Chloe gave birth. But, alas, things didn’t go as planned.”
Grant stared at Maddie for a moment, taking in her mix of cynicism and calm, yet he found no cracks in her facade.
