Mariela swallowed nervously. “There is no point in taking me,” she said, “Lennon and I are nothing to each other anymore. You can’t use me to threaten him.”
“Oh?” Seeing her retreat, Nikolas took a step forward, locking eyes with her.

His lips curled into a faint smile as he looked at Mariela. “Ms. Logan truly is a rare beauty. No wonder both Lennon and Jaime can’t seem to let
you go.”
Mariela took another step back, suspicion flashing through her gaze.“You know Jaime?”
Nikolas shrugged casually.“He’s just a dog I keep around. Something to toy with when I am bored.”
Mariela frowned.
She thought, “So, Jaime is working for him.
“No wonder the Herman Group, which had been on the brink of bankruptcy, miraculously revived. Nikolas was the one pulling the strings.
“But how have they even met? Hadn’t Nikolas been abroad all these years?”
Lowering her gaze, Mariela pondered their connection, barely noticing his next words.
Nikolas’s expression grew impatient as he noted her distraction.“I am talking to you.”
Mariela snapped back to attention. His earlier words “You will find out soon enough” resurfaced in her mind. Fear struck her heart, and she asked urgently, “You already called Lennon?”
“What, worried about him?” Nikolas lazily tilted his head, watching her reaction. “Didn’t you say you two have nothing to do with each other? Why so concerned?”
Nikolas shoved his hands into his pockets, smirking, “Afraid he will come here and die?”
Mariela forced herself to stay calm.“I don’t want to be responsible for someone’s death. It is not just about him. Anyone in his place, I would not want them to take such a risk.”
Nikolas scoffed, “Do you think I would believe that?” His amusement deepened. “You two really like putting on a show. Since you are so fond of acting, why not put on a grand performance for me? If I am entertained, I might just consider leaving Lennon’s body intact.”
Mariela went rigid. She could not bear to hear such ruthless words. A chill seeped into her bones, her fear intensifying.
