“Thank you,” Angelica said softly, as she took the gift bag.

“You’re welcome,” Annika replied, her eyes crinkling. “Angel, we’re going to be good friends, okay?” 

“Okay,” Angelica said, smiling now.“Annika, let’s go to my room. I have lots of fun stuff there. We can draw, build with blocks, play checkers, and play with Barbie dolls.” 

“Okay.” 

Angelica reached out her hand, and Annika took it. The two girls walked upstairs hand in hand, their laughter filling the air. 

“They seem to be getting along really well,” Bryce smiled. 

Mariela watched the girls‘ adorable backs as they walked away.“Yeah, I didn’t think they’d hit it off so quickly. It was thoughtful of you.” 

Bryce’s eyes sparkled with amusement. 

Of course, he had thought it through. Getting Annika to play with Angelica was just an excuse to see Mariela and spend more time with her. 

Every time he thought of Lennon’s words being rejected again, he felt a lump in his chest. 

Mariela sat down on the sofa.“Mr. Vance, please help yourself to the coffee. Don’t be shy.” 

She then turned to Jamya.“Jamya, could you bring some snacks and fruit upstairs for the girls?” 

“Sure,” Jamya replied. 

Bryce steered the conversation toward work.“Ms. Logan, has the court date for the BioLumina Group case been set?” 

“Yes, it’s on the 15th of next month.” 

“How’s the preparation going?” 

Mariela replied, “It’s almost done. There are just a few minor issues left. Since you’re here, maybe we can go over them.” 

“Sounds good,” Bryce smiled.“My pleasure.” 

Mariela was a workaholic, and once she got started, she couldn’t stop. 

Bryce had chosen the perfect topic. 

The two of them chatted for the entire afternoon. 

The sun gradually dipped in the sky. Before they knew it, dusk had fallen.
