Hell no!
Thankfully, Jane had a habit of turning the phone calls on speaker, so we also heard Leo's absurd request. After his first defeat, he approached this topic adroitly this time.
"It's our first Christmas after meeting you, my little angel. Zoe is really excited about a family holiday.
Can you please celebrate this year's Christmas with us?"
His soulful voice was filled with pleading, he tried to sound like a heart-sick dad, who hadn't gotten a chance to taste happiness.
Jane looked around, admiring the preparations, but her gaze paused at Bright. He was climbing a staircase to set the star on the top of the Christmas tree. She didn't ask for my opinion and replied to Leo.
"Thanks, dad. I would love to spend the Christmas holidays with you, but next year.
I have promised daddy to go out this time."
Damn!
Jane simply refused Leo for her prior plans with Bright, not bothering to sugarcoat anything. This was the quality I always wanted to possess. Kids were like this, transparent and pure-hearted, they spoke what they had in their hearts.
Leo was unable to utter a single word after that!
As getting rid of such a nuisance was an achievement itself, we took the Christmas celebrations to the next level and booked a table in Jane's favorite restaurant for Christmas Eve. It was a nice change in routine.
Usually, I prepared homemade meals for both evenings, but this year was special. We spent the entire evening outside, enjoying the festivities.
Christmas in Lakon city hits differently every time and now, I am with my loving family. It was a rarity that I was so happy in my hometown as well.
We went to listen to choir music, met Santa Claus, and bought everything that Jane selected. She had an unlimited wish list for today's outing.
"Daddy, I want a unicorn!"
"Mommy, I want to take pictures with Elf!"
"Uncle, why is our elf on the shelf different from the real ones?"
And so on …
Honestly speaking, it was much better to spend a holiday with kids. They knew how to lighten up the atmosphere with their cuteness, letting your inner child free once again.
After an eventful night, we had a big Christmas breakfast, then Henry gave his special Christmas speech, and we opened the presents. As Jane still believed that these gifts were delivered by the real Santa Claus, I read her letter to the South Pole from the mailbox and wrapped the exact same items.
She was over the moon to see her new ice hockey gear.
"Look, mommy!
Santa had sent me a new ice hockey uniform in pink color. And it has a unicorn on it."
Jane didn't wait for the practice session and wore it once,
"How am I looking in my new outfit, mommy?"
"Hmm, then what about the special princess's dress you bought with me?"
"Now, I will have a baby brother or a sister soon. It will be so much fun!"
She left the cell phone on the counter and rushed to inform Henry; Bright followed her immediately.
"I have to stop her before she can announce it publicly."
Smiling at our silly encounter, I stirred a spoon in the pot. Jane's excitement fluttered my heart. That was when my mobile caught my eye.
Holy cow!
Someone was on call!
I picked up that call and spoke hurriedly.
"Sorry for the disturbance. What were you saying?"
Surprisingly, Zoe was on the other side, he spoke dejectedly.
"Sorry, mommy. I don't want to disturb you, but …"
My heart did a somersault in my chest to hear his teary voice, he sniffled pitifully.
"Daddy was admitted to the hospital yesterday. He went for a check-up but didn't come back.
I am so lonely, mommy. All the servants have gone to spend Christmas with their families."
