“We have a meeting with Mr. Leo’s sponsors in the afternoon.”

As the hockey season was in full bloom, sponsors had requested to discuss media strategy. I didn’t pay much attention to it and focused on the heaps of pending files. Then I went to attend the meeting at our fixed time later.

But Mr. Leo was late!

As his manager, his absence created issues for me. As soon as I entered the conference hall, the company representatives fired off multiple questions in quick succession.

“Where is Leo, Miss Becker? Didn’t you inform him? When will he come?”

Leo was undoubtedly a punctual man, giving prime importance to his business every time. His questionable disappearance also confused me. So, I asked my assistant.

“Contact Mr. Leo’s assistant, Brandon.

Why hasn’t he arrived yet?”

Brandon forgot to deliver me Leo’s message and at that crucial moment, he scratched his ear nervously.

“Mr. Leo had taken sick leave due to high fever, ma’am. He is unavailable now.”

Sick leave?

It was the preference of every athlete to maintain his health and fitness. And due to his strong immunity system, Leo rarely contracted any illness. Then all of a sudden, how come he fell ill?

However, it was none of my business!

Since he had already signed all the follow-up projects, he would pay the penalty himself because of breaching the contract.

The meeting got canceled, and the sponsors didn’t appear happy due to this predicament. So, Brandon suggested it to me.

“Ma’am, you must go to investigate this matter. It’s so unlikely of Mr. Leo.”

Why should I go?

I was about to snap at my assistant when my cell phone rang, I excused myself to see my brother’s name flashing on the screen.

Henry told me. “I have found a doctor you were looking for, Laura!”

Whoa!

This breaking news immediately overwhelmed me with a rush of emotions as I found myself burning with a fire of revenge. The feeling of being closer to my ultimate destination took over my mind, making me forget everything else.

I picked up my bag and rushed to meet my brother. Henry had arranged a special meeting with Doctor Max from the village. More precisely, he was admitted to a small clinic. Henry’s assistant was standing outside the room’s door when I reached there.

“Doctor Max is ready to talk to you, Miss Becker.”

I could only nod in response as the urgency to see the key witness hastened my steps, I barged into the room without knocking.

“Doctor Max?”

The skeletal figure lying on the bed was definitely the worst version of that village doctor as the paleness on his old face made him look like a patient. That healthy man was turned into an oldie in just a few years.

I found it difficult to recognize him right away, Doctor Max also refused to accept that I was the same Laura Green from the past simultaneously. He spoke suspiciously.

“Prove it that you are Laura. Tell me your blood group!”

His medical query made me chuckle, it was quite natural to not acknowledge my presence because of a drastic change in my appearance.

I dragged a chair and sat on it, responding to him professionally.

“But everything comes with a price, Laura. Give me ten million dollars, and I will provide you with all the records and secrets.”

After demanding money like a businessman, he began to sob piteously.

“I am sick, Laura. You should sympathize with me as I have saved your life once when you were at the brink of death.”

As ten million dollars were nothing in front of my revenge plan, I agreed with him after some back and forth.

“Alright, Doctor Max. We have a deal!

Now, tell me the secret about my pregnancy.”

My gut feeling was hinting that Doctor Max had a bigger fish to fry, and he must have concealed a grave secret from me. Every speck of my existence became attentive as he parted his lips to speak.

“three years ago, when I met you, you were pregnant. It was a miracle that the baby’s heartbeat was strong despite your fatigue. You were sick because of the physical trauma and complications in the pregnancy.

We had to perform an emergency C-section.”

I was aware of this part of the story as the scar on my belly remained on my body as a reminder of my loss. I had sworn to let it be there until I could take revenge on the killers.

However, Doctor Max then averted his face and uttered a mind-boggling revelation.

“Your child survived that day, Laura. Despite all the issues, you gave birth to a healthy and beautiful child.”

“What?”

I asked as if Doctor Max weren’t clear at first, screeching in terror.

“What the hell are you talking about? ”
