Even with anesthesia, I felt the cold instruments invading my body.

Another child lost.

Outside the hospital, I pressed my hand against my empty womb as tears rolled silently down my face.

I'm sorry, little one. In your next life, find a better mother than me.

The next day, James didn't come home. He only called.

"Hey babe, can't make it today. Mom's not feeling well, so I need to check on her. You know how it is."

But sixty seconds earlier, Rachel had posted online.

The photo showed her in nothing but a silk robe while James knelt shirtless before her, massaging her feet. His face still flushed, hair disheveled. Clothes strewn across the floor—the aftermath of what was clearly a passionate encounter.

I gathered everything I owned and set it ablaze.

Early the next morning at the airport, James texted:

"Morning gorgeous. Eaten yet? God, I hate being away from you. Missing you like crazy."

"Just hang tight at home. I'll bring you back something special. Keep thinking about those lips of yours—could use them right about now."

I glanced up to see him across the terminal, one arm wrapped around Rachel in a deep kiss while his free hand typed messages to me.

The multitasking was almost impressive.

I didn't respond. Instead, I packaged all the evidence from my phone and scheduled it to hit James's work email in a few hours.

Then I walked toward a boarding gate in the opposite direction from theirs.

Meanwhile, James arrived at the destination wedding venue. His mother and guests mingled excitedly, champagne flowing.

He checked his phone, noticed my silence, and felt a flicker of unease.

After a moment's hesitation, he called his assistant:

"What the fuck are you talking about? How could she possibly know?"

"And what plane crash? She promised to wait at home. Why would she leave the country? Are you fucking with me? I swear to God I'll end you!"

His words denied it, but the terror in his bloodshot eyes told the truth.

The assistant trembled as he handed over his phone:

"I—I swear I'm not making this up, sir."

"You've been focused on the wedding, so I've been monitoring your work email like you asked. When you mentioned booking her ticket, I checked your inbox and found this. It has all your conversations with Dr. Lin, photos of the... specimens, and also..."

"And WHAT?" James bellowed.

"An abortion record, sir. Your wife was two months pregnant, but she terminated it last night."

James grabbed the phone. As he scrolled through the contents, the color drained from his face.
