Nash's smile faded, a sudden wave of discomfort washing over him as he toyed with his meal. He realized his comment had been unnecessary. Among their trio, he often felt like the odd one out, and that feeling gnawed at him.
Jackson's eyes sparkled with amusement, gazing at Fiona with a warmth that was hard to miss. "It's delicious," he remarked, his voice rich and engaging.
"Hey, big brother, I heard your chicken curry is top-notch. Can I try it next time?" Fiona chimed in, her tone teasing and playful.
"Of course, I'll whip up some for you when we're back," Jackson responded, ever willing to cater to Fiona's whims without a second thought.
"Jackson, I’d like to..." Nash started to say, but a sudden chill ran up his spine, cutting him off. Feeling uneasy, he quickly backtracked, "Actually, Jackson, something’s come up for me that day. Can't make it."
It was almost comical.
After dinner, Jackson drove them back to school, slipping Fiona some candies as they parted. As Nash walked away, he shook his head, baffled. It seemed no one in the family spared a thought for him; their world revolved around Fiona.
Back in the classroom, Fiona immediately dozed off on her desk, sleeping through two whole periods. Tyler even draped his jacket over her while she napped.
Nash noticed this and felt a flicker of annoyance. What was Tyler's deal? Always trying to show off.
He considered yanking the jacket away, knowing it would wake Fiona up. His hand paused mid-air as he shot Tyler a glare, sighed, and sat back down, determined to outdo Tyler next time.
"Alright, everyone! We have exams tomorrow, so be prepared," Keaton announced, tapping his ruler against the desk to get their attention. The class remained slouched and indifferent, barely acknowledging his words.
Nash looked around, grabbed an eraser, and lobbed it at Tyler. What was he gawking at? Fiona wasn’t his to ogle!
"Nash, what are you doing?" Megan, one of the proctors, demanded, giving Tyler a knowing look. "Focus on your own test, and stop distracting others."
The proctors had been shuffled and assigned by lot, and Megan was less than thrilled to be with Class 19. She found Fiona and Tyler particularly bothersome.
"Who exactly are you talking about?" Nash challenged, his eyes sharp as daggers. No one could criticize Fiona around him.
In moments like these, his resemblance to Jackson was uncanny, especially when he was riled up.
