Chapter 33
Brooklyn

After my frustrating interaction with Aden, it’s a relief to see Hudson’s face when he opens his door a few moments later.

I push past him and flop down on his bed, groaning.

“What’s wrong?” he asks, coming to sit next to me. “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” I murmur, even though I am anything but.

Aden is such a stubborn jerk. He portrays himself as this powerful figure, this mafia boss with Alpha blood, but when it comes down to it, he won’t do what he needs to do to save himself.

All because of some stupid idea he has that being vulnerable would make him truly weak.

For now, I push my feelings about Aden to the side and choose to distract myself with my surroundings.

The room is tastefully decorated in shades of brown and green that match Hudson’s eyes. It’s different than the rest of the house, like he’s made it his own little haven. Beautiful furniture, shelves of books, what look like expensive photographs on the wall.

“Is this what you do all day?” I ask. After all, he couldn’t be more different from the rest of his family. Who does he talk to? Who could possibly understand him?

Hudson shrugs. “Yeah, I mostly stay in here.” He nods to his desk, which holds an expensive-looking computer monitor and more books. “I keep busy.”

“Don’t you get bored?” I push, sitting up.

“Of course,” he says, laughing a little. “But doesn’t everyone?” His brows knit together as he looks at me earnestly.

Despite the fact that I’m not what Hudson truly wants, he certainly is easy on the eyes. He has the kind of body that clothing designers must picture when they make men’s clothes. Things fall off his shoulders beautifully, and I find myself staring at his neck.

No wonder I fell for him so fast.

“Do you ever get to leave?” I want to know.

“Of course,” he replies. “Don’t forget, you met me outside of this house.”

“So, let’s go,” I say, with big, excited eyes, even though I already know what he will say.

Hudson’s face gets serious again. “We can’t leave now. Not for a while. Not until things are more…settled.”

I sigh, disappointed, and fall back against his pillows.

I sigh, taking my hand back. “Yeah, but that was before I had all the information.” Back when I thought he was Prince Charming, who could really love me, not the heir to a mafia cartel.

“I’m going to be a good husband to you,” Hudson murmurs. “I knew I’d have to marry a woman at some point. The fact that I get to do it with someone who is my best friend? I’m so lucky.”

I flick my eyes to him, full of doubt. “But what kind of wife would you want me to be?” I ask softly. “Will I even be able to pursue my career, which means so much to me? Helping people is all I’ve got.”

Hudson hesitates. I know what he’s thinking. That the answer is no—his wife would be expected to stay home, manage his social affairs, raise their kids.

I sigh again. “This isn’t what either of us really want,” I say again, speaking the truth for both of us. “But somehow, you’ve just…given in to it. I feel sorry for you.”

Hudson flinches, then hangs his head.

“I’m sorry, Brooklyn,” he says softly. “I’ll do my best to make you happy.”

Sensing that I’ve said more than I should have, I scooch next to him, putting my head on his shoulder. “And so will I. When I go, I’m not going to leave you behind.”

He looks at me then, and I can see it written all over his face.

Escape is out of the question.
