"Lindsey, do you want to accompany Grandpa to visit Grandma?" The old man looked at Lindsey with anticipation.
Zayn stood behind Lindsey without saying a word. Only at this point was he slightly moved, but the old man did not notice his expression.
Since the old man invited her, Lindsey could not possibly refuse him.
Lindsey got into the car with Mrs. Wendy and Grandpa Guggenheim. She recognized the driver, who smiled brightly at her and said loudly, "Good day, Young Madam."
She did not know how to respond to that and just returned a faint smile.
What Lindsey did not expect was that Zayn's car also followed behind them.
She did not know how she felt about that, so she turned away and pretended to enjoy the scenery out the window.
The Guggenheims had a private cemetery on a hilltop in the western suburbs and this entire mountain was bought by them exclusively as a cemetery.
Grandma Guggenheim’s grave was surrounded by many Acacia trees. It was not the flowering season, so there were only lush branches surrounding the white tombstone in the middle.
With so many trees, one could only imagine how beautiful it would be when the flowers bloom in June and July.
The old man and Lindsey got down from the car. Lindsey signaled the bodyguard to help the old man to his wheelchair, but he was stopped.
"No. If my wife sees me visiting her in a wheelchair, she'll surely laugh at me down under." The old man waved his hand with a smile on his face and reached out to take his cane.
This cane was the one that Lindsey bought for him last time.
Noticing Lindsey's line of sight, the old man smiled and raised his hand. "I still like the one you bought for me most."
Lindsey smiled and lowered her head. She knew that the one she bought could not possibly compare to those custom-made models worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
This was nothing but the old man's kindness.
She said, "This one is old, next time I'll buy a new one for you."
The old man instantly laughed and said, "Okay, you promised!"
Lindsey suddenly felt a tingling sensation in her nose for some reason.
Zayn's car also came to a stop, but he just stood by the car and did not go over to them.
Although they had been married for so long, this was the first time Lindsey came to visit Zayn's grandmother.
She held the old man as they walked step by step to the grave of Grandma Guggenheim.
"Your Grandma liked Acacia flowers most and thought their brightly-colored flowers were particularly beautiful. When I was young, I was too busy working to send her a bouquet of her favorite flowers. I only remembered when she was gone, so I got someone to buy the saplings and spent three days and nights planting so many trees for her by hand. I don't know if she can still see them."
The old man finished with a bitter smile. That smile carried a hint of regret and nostalgia.
His body was not very strong and was panting after a few steps, but he persisted and kept walking to the grave.
She meant it as a joke to cheer up the old man, but he said earnestly, "You're both amazing ladies with vibrant personalities."
His gaze still lingered on the photo, but the smile on his face faded as he said, "When I was young, I made your grandmother suffer with me and it was too late to make up for it later. When Zayn was a child, he was very much like Grandma, so lively and smiley. He’s like a cheeky little monkey and was closest to her. Then something happened in the family and his personality changed drastically. After Grandma left, he became a totally different person. He’s cold to everyone and emotionless."
The old man sighed and continued, "Lindsey, after you both got married, although you’re both always fighting and Zayn also did a lot of things to wrong you, Grandpa could see that he was much better than before. He would actually laugh, fool around, and lose his temper. He’s more like a person than he ever was in twenty years.
"What happened to Zayn is ultimately Grandpa's fault for letting him experience those things at such a young age." The old man's eyes were full of self-blame. He clutched the cane in his hand and turned his head to look at the beautiful woman on the tombstone. "You also blamed me until the end. I know you’re not willing to forgive me."
Lindsey saw the sorrowful loneliness and deep guilt in the old man's cloudy eyes and felt sorry, so she said, "Grandpa, you're not to blame, neither is Zayn. You’ve done your best back then, so I’m sure Grandma will also understand."
The old man shook his head. His eyes were still fixated on the photo, but they looked empty. "It's all Grandpa's fault."
Not protecting them well was his fault.
"Grandpa..." Lindsey's heart was greatly shaken. She had never seen the old man in such a state. These words were probably pressed in the bottom of his heart for many years.
"I think you’re already aware of Zayn’s feelings for you." The old man withdrew his gaze and looked at Lindsey.
"I can see that your feelings for Zayn haven't changed either. If it wasn't for this incident, you and Zayn might...At the end of the day, he has still wronged you. But Lindsey, we can't keep living in the past. Grandpa knows that it’s hard to overlook those things, but how many people are willing to keep their promise for so many years and wait for that person?"
The old man was anxious and coughed violently. Lindsey hurriedly went forward to stroke his back so that he could catch his breath.
Lindsey’s eyes were lowered and she had no expression on her face, so the old man could not see her reaction.
