Quentin created this group chat back then, but the only one who was active in this group was himself. He would occasionally send some quirky stickers and emojis, but the other two people in this group chat were like monks who took a vow of silence.
He sent over dozens of pictures. Everyone in the group photo was dressed nicely in red or pink and smiled so brightly. They all looked very happy and festive. Moreover, there were even pictures of Mrs. Wendy’s signature dishes that they all loved growing up.
After Quentin sent these out, he thought that this operation of “make them jealous” was quite successful. The corners of his mouth curled up into a more mischievous smile. In less than three minutes, Zayn, who had not spoken in this group chat for years, just typed one word. "Delete!"
Then, Zayn sent another message. "Delete these now. If I find out that you still keep these on your phone, you know the consequences!"
Quentin could almost imagine Zayn’s cold face when he read that last sentence.
He quivered a little, but perhaps because Zayn was far away or perhaps because the environment here was too comforting, Quentin did not fully obey Zayn. He just deleted the ones of Lindsey and kept the rest.
Quentin grinned at a certain glum-faced avatar on his phone and felt a strong satisfaction of having succeeded in his mischief.
He was so used to being bullied by the boss, and now he finally had the chance to get back at Zayn, so he felt like he made the right decision to come over.
Thinking about this just made Quentin exhilarated.
"What are you doing?" A female voice came from beside him without a warning.
Quentin immediately turned off his phone screen and looked at the person that approached. His mischievous smile morphed into his usual professional smile. “Ms. Young.”
The baby was fed and sleepy, so Ginny put him to bed and had a rare moment of relaxation. This time, they were both standing in front of the window. It was snowing outside, and the snowflakes contrasted with the dark sky. It was a beautiful and romantic scene.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Ginny looked out the window a little lost in thought and said absentmindedly.
Quentin casually stuffed the phone in his hand into his pants pocket. "Yeah, it's beautiful. It hasn't snowed this much in Atlantic City in a long time."
"Mr. Quentin, are you from Atlantic City?" Ginny asked with a smile.
Quentin shook his head, his fake smile turned into a somewhat self-deprecating smile. "Not really. When I was a child, I was just wandering around and didn’t have a place to live. I just roamed around in many cities, like a little vagabond. Old Master Guggenheim took me in when I was six or seven years old. Since then, I’ve been living in Atlantic City."
Being a homeless child made him encounter things that normal people could not imagine. Being fostered was not pure luck. He must have suffered a lot too.
Ginny smiled understandingly. "It's not easy."
Quentin returned to his usual self after a moment. "No one has it easy. I’m considered lucky to come out from those conditions."
He could turn those bitter memories into valuable experiences and even speak so calmly about it, so he must have a very strong mind.
"What were you talking about?" Lindsey handed the sliced orange in her hand to Ginny. She saw that Ginny did not look too well and asked with some concern, "What's wrong? Are you not feeling well?"
Ginny shook her head and forced out a smile. "No, just thinking about my parents."
She then took the fruit platter from Lindsey’s hands and patted her shoulder with her other hand. "We have to move forward."
Lindsey also thought about her parents when Ginny mentioned hers. Lindsey’s parents seemed to have evaporated into thin air. They would appear abruptly then disappear without a trace.
"Lindsey." Ginny, who was beside her, looked out the window at the snow. Her eyes were a little hollow. She suddenly asked, "Do you think I've changed?"
Lindsey was stunned by her question, then laughed. "No, you’re still as beautiful as when I first met you."
In fact, Ginny did change. She was more reserved and no longer had that princess vibe, but Lindsey did not say so.
Ginny looked out the window and laughed suddenly. "Really?"
Before Lindsey could reply, the dark sky with snowflakes was suddenly illuminated by colorful fireworks. The bright and colorful splendor spread as far as the eye could see that Lindsey was speechless for a while.
