FORREST
IT TOOK an effort to calm myself before I hit the dial button.
He picked up right away. “He will be at the Duncan Hotel this weekend. You happen not to be associated with this visit, have you?”
“I’d been waiting for this moment since I found out he’d been asking someone to dig into our past, Alan. Don’t stop me now, and it’s not that I will allow you to stop me if you will ever try.”
“He’s a twisted bastard, Forrest. You know it,” he said firmly. He must be fuming right now.
My temper boiled over. “Is there something you are not telling me? I don’t like surprises, Alan. You better tell me now before I face him.”
“I watched you grow up, son. I know this revenge plot you’ve been planning for years would not do any good for you. You have money, and damn it, Forrest, I don’t get it why you have to work in the nightclub when you’re developing a multi-million dollar tech.”
“Isn’t it the idea of keeping the low profile yours?” I reminded him. “About that, it’s not nearly done. I’m not even sure if we meet the deadline or get the deal. So don’t be a little too excited about it. We might fail for the second time.”
“You will get it if you just focus on that project.”
“You know I can’t do that. I have other priorities and matters that need more attention.” I already spent millions on this project, and I hired qualified people for the job so that I had time to fix my shits.
“You can, but you won’t, and you choose to spend your time risking your life just to satisfy your doubt of the truth.”
Before my mind could travel back to Megan, I focused on what really mattered at hand
“It’s only a matter of time before he finds me, Alan. I can’t risk my friends, and you know what happened to the man you and Mama asked to do the job.”
“Dealing with risk is a part of his job, Forrest. Get that conscience out of your system because we’ve been taking care of his family for years.”
“It won’t bring him back to life.”
“Is this why you are willing to risk yours with your revenge plot?” I could sense his frustration, but my decision was final. No one could change it, even him.
“This is not a revenge plot.”
“Then what do you call it? And what would your mother think of me if she will know that I was helping you to find this bastard all along?”
“She won’t find out unless you open your mouth. I just need answers.”
“Your mother is capable of giving you the answers you’ve been looking for.”
I sighed deeply. I got it why he was worried. I was here because of him, and if something happened to me, he would take responsibility for my actions. “I need to do this.”
“The reason why I was helping you was to find out who he was, his whereabouts, and not for you to pursue another plan.” He huffed from the other line. “You’re a loose cannon, Forrest.”
“I’ll be fine, Alan. Thanks for the info.”
“I hope I won’t regret this.” Before he hung up, he asked sarcastically, “Do you need anything else? A gun, a woman maybe before you walk into the war zone. How about a body bag?”
