Rose was caught off guard.
This scumbag’s actually willing to spend money?
Deep down, she wanted nothing more than to reject him. But then the memory of all the vile things Ethan had done came rushing back. That hatred flared again, burning hot in her chest.
And she couldn’t let it go unpunished.
“Sure,” she said with a tight smile, swallowing her disgust.
Ethan lit up. “There’s a restaurant across from the hospital. I reserved a room.”
“Great,” Rose said. “You head over and get us a room. I’ll clean up here and be right behind you.”
Ethan beamed and left in high spirits.
Rose watched him walk away, her gaze turning icy. She slipped a small bottle of pepper spray and a sleek surgical knife into her purse, then got up and followed.
…
At the restaurant, Rose found Ethan and discreetly took a picture of him from behind, right outside the private room. She posted it to her social feed with the caption: “Thanks for bringing me to such a fancy place.” Then she made sure to push the post directly to Vivian.
She walked in and sat across from Ethan, her smile as fake as glossed plastic. “Mr. Ethan, what’s gotten into you? Feeling generous today?”
Ethan laughed awkwardly. He couldn’t very well admit that his newfound favor came from Rose “pleasing” Houston.
“Rose, once I make it big, I won’t forget how much we used to mean to each other. I’ll take you out for meals all the time.”
“Then I won’t hold back,” Rose said as she grabbed the menu—and deliberately ordered the most expensive items on it.
Ethan stiffened as he watched her selections pile up. This was nothing like the simple meals they’d shared while dating.
He started sweating. “Rose… this stuff’s pretty pricey. We don’t even know if it’s good.”
Rose didn’t blink. “I’ve had it before. It’s delicious.”
Not a hint of thriftiness in her tone.
She handed him the menu. Ethan, too nervous to order anything else, said they had enough and passed the menu to the server.
Rose could see how uncomfortable he was. Once a parasite, always a parasite. She had paid for everything when they were together. Now he was wincing at footing the bill even once. It was disgusting.
“Mr. Ethan, when are you going to pay me the rest of what you owe?” she asked casually.
Ethan fidgeted. “Let me breathe, will you? I already gave you last month’s salary—my mother-in-law was furious.”
“This month’s paycheck is coming soon,” Rose said flatly. “Make sure you pay on time.”
