“I’ll figure something out,” Houston said, his voice heavy with exhaustion.

He drove to the hospital to pick up Rose, who hadn’t gotten off work yet. While waiting in the car, he pulled out a cigar and lit it—but then stopped.

Rose doesn’t like the smell.

He sighed and stubbed it out.

Moments later, Rose walked out of the hospital… right next to Ethan.

Houston’s eyes darkened instantly. He pressed the horn. Rose and Ethan both turned toward the sound.

Ethan looked visibly awkward. Rose, however, smiled like a blooming flower.

“Houston!” she called out cheerfully, leaving Ethan behind as she trotted toward the car.

Sliding into the passenger seat, Rose noticed the half-extinguished cigar on the ground. She paused, then turned to him, gently concerned.

“Smoking again? Bad mood?”

Houston didn’t answer at first. His eyes were locked on Ethan with a venomous stare. But hearing Rose’s soft voice, the ice in his gaze thawed. He turned to her, grumbling, “You’ve been getting too close to Ethan. It makes me uncomfortable.”

Rose’s heart jolted—as if doused in ice water.

She had been so consumed by her own desire for revenge against Ethan that she hadn’t realized she’d dragged an innocent Houston into the mess too. She didn’t care if Vivian got caught in the crossfire—Vivian deserved it—but Houston?

She slipped her hand into his arm and quickly tried to explain. “Houston, don’t be mad. I only got close to him on purpose. I just…”

She struggled for the right words.

Houston grabbed her bag casually—and caught sight of the pepper spray and small surgical knife inside.

His brows lifted. Then he chuckled and rubbed her head. “Trying to get revenge?”

Rose stuck her tongue out and made a silly face. “Busted.”

Houston couldn’t help laughing. “This plan of yours—hurting the enemy while wounding yourself in the process. Did you ever think about how I’d feel?”

Rose blinked, stunned.

“I’m sorry,” she murmured. She’d assumed Houston didn’t love her. If he didn’t care, why would it matter who she spent time with?

Houston said softly, “You being with him—it made me worry. Not just about your safety, but… what if your hopelessly romantic heart fell for his sweet words again?”

Rose scowled. “As if. I’d rather kill him.”

Houston pulled her into his arms and whispered, “Then let me handle it. You want to see him ruined? Dead? Disgraced? Just say the word, and I’ll walk through hell for you. But you—you stay away from him, okay?”

Now that she knew Houston’s true identity and power, she fully believed he could do it.

She curled up against his chest. So maybe he has a hidden crush. But in the end, it was her he married. Her who got his warmth. And that… was enough.

Vivian roared, “Ethan! Do you think I’m so low that I should eat her leftovers?!”
