When Ethan recognized the woman approaching, his demeanor shifted immediately into respectful warmth. "Charlotte! What brings you to the outpatient clinic? If you need anything, just say the word. We’d be happy to come serve you personally in the inpatient wing."
His elegant manners, combined with his handsome features, made him instantly appealing to a woman like Charlotte.
“Dr. Ethan, not every doctor is as courteous as you,” she said with an arrogant tilt of her chin toward Rose. “She’s my attending physician, and she’s quite the diva. Getting her to review a report is harder than seeing a celebrity.”
Ethan replied smoothly, “Rose is young and inexperienced. Honestly, her credentials are the weakest in our department. Her medical skills aren't anything to write home about. If you'd like, I’d be honored to oversee your health from now on. I’ll always be on call—anything to keep you comfortable, ma'am.”
“Oh?” Charlotte raised an eyebrow. “You seem to know her well.”
Ethan offered a bitter smile. “She’s my ex. We were together for ten years.”
Charlotte paused, now looking Ethan over more carefully. He was well-dressed, cultured, and there did seem to be a match in background between him and Rose. Unlike the aloof and stubborn Rose, Ethan was eager to please—almost fawning. That alone endeared him to Charlotte.
After a moment’s thought, she said, “Dr. Ethan, if your skills are really that much better than Dr. Rose’s, then there’s something I’d like to ask you to handle.”
“Of course. Anything.”
“My stepson suffers from severe insomnia. Think you can cure him?”
Ethan recalled the research Rose had done on sleep disorders—papers she’d written that he had read extensively. He had a solid grasp on the subject and answered confidently, “Ma’am, Rose and I went to the same university. She stopped at her master’s; I continued on to my doctorate. Any illness she can treat, I can too. In fact, I might be able to do even better.”
Charlotte beamed. She’d seen how even Rose’s shallow skills had improved Houston’s condition—if Ethan could fully cure him, she’d finally gain real clout in front of the old man. He might finally see her as more than a nuisance.
“Excellent. If you can cure him, I’ll make sure you’re handsomely rewarded.”
Ethan was secretly thrilled. His job had come thanks to Vivian’s father, but he knew he’d struggle to rise through the ranks without real backing. If he could build his own connections, maybe even the Brown family would start respecting him.
“What’s his name?” he asked. “I’ll review his case right away. Just send him to me—I’ll give it my all.”
Charlotte’s fondness for Ethan deepened. “His name is Houston. He’s currently Dr. Rose’s patient.”
Ethan’s smile froze.
Vivian had just mentioned the guy—Houston, heir to the Clarke family’s empire. The guy ran Crestview like a prince, despite his age.
So Charlotte’s his stepmother? And she actually cared enough to find a specialist for him?
