Chapter 91

sn’t unexpected, but it didn’t make it hurt any less My mate started to pull away from me. Bit by bit, s were changing and there was no way to stop it. went to the hospital alone to check on the baby and came back with tears in my eyes. Why did I have to do it alone?

He asked, oh, yes he asked. He asked how the appointment went, what the doctor said, how I’d gotten pregnant despite the birth control. He asked. He showed interest but it felt forced. There was no tangible reason why he could not go with me yet he refused.

“Don’t think the worst, Sia,” I muttered to myself when I felt tears gather in my eyes again.

The pregnancy was already tough enough, did I have to add a mate that didn’t care about the baby? That’s exactly what it was. When I fell sick, Cahir was there to comfort me, to hold my hair when I threw up, pat my back and wipe my tears. He’d always ask how I felt but there was barely any word about the baby.

The bun in the oven was just four weeks and the doctor said pregnancy was for forty weeks. The contraceptives could have hurt the baby but I couldn’t tell Cahir that because I didn’t want to hear the nonchalance in his voice.

“Luna?” Tony knocked on my door. “The Beta is here to see you.”

“I’ll be right out!” I called in a loud voice as I tried to hide my teary

voice.

Blinking back the tears that had gathered in my eyes, I powdered my face before leaving the room. My complexion wasn’t great these days and although my sickness had reduced considerably, I still had dizzy spells, low appetite, and sometimes, my body temperature rose. I was starting to think the goddess blessed my baby with fire.

“Aristo, what’s up?” I gave the beta a weak smile as I got to the room he was waiting in. He gave me a once over, his eyes dragging down my body in a way that made me self–conscious. I wore a simple floral dress that stopped mid–thigh but because of my weight loss, the dress hung on me. “Don’t say anything.” I warned but he spoke at the same time I did.

“Has your mate stopped feeding you?” Concern shone in his eyes and reflected in his voice.

“Haha,” I laughed dryly. Although Cahir didn’t care for a child, he cared about me. He made sure the doctor followed up on my case diligently and provided all the food I liked, everything to make me comfortable. It was as if he was trying to apologize indirectly for his lack of enthusiasm for the baby by giving me everything I needed while he spent more time at work.

“What are you here for?” I asked as I took a seat opposite Aristo.

“I came to see you,” Aristo responded, his eyes still on me.

“What happened?” I perked up, it was not unusual for the beta to just drop by the Alpha Castle at random. but this time, I felt he had a mission. Did something happen to my mate?

“I heard what happened from Cahir and I’m worried about you.” Indeed, he looked worried.

“Ah, I started with a blush. “There’s nothing to be wormed about.”

What do you mean what am I going to do?” I laughed nervously. What more was there to do asides from

iting for him to come to terms with the pregnancy?

You’re keeping the child?” I felt a chill run down my spine at Aristo’s question

“What do you mean keeping the child?” I asked in a sharp tone.

“Cahir doesn’t want this child,” he reminded me. “Are you sure you want a child whose father already rejected them?”

“Careful.” I hissed without knowing. “I don’t want to think about what you’re implying.”

“It’s” He scrubbed a hand down his face. “I’m worried for you and your child,” he confessed slowly “Cahir is not a man that tolerates things like this.”

“Forget I said that.” He winced. “That was thoughtless of me.” He shook his head. “I uh I came to check up on you because I knew you would be distressed but it seemed I’ve said something stupid” He chuckled without humour. “We’re friends, Sia, and I care about you. You’re my best friend’s mate and I know he has his shortcomings so if you need help in any way, don’t hesitate to come to me.” He smiled, this time, his smile was relaxed and genuine.

When I said nothing after that, he gave another awkward smile. “I talk a lot, and now I’ve come to say something irrelevant.” He scratched the back of his head. “Did my words alarm you?”

“Cahir loves you,” he said as if I didn’t know that. “You know that already,” he added.

Yes, I knew Cahir loved me. He’d confessed with his mouth and he’d done his best to prove it. It was the baby he didn’t love – or in his words, it was the baby he wasn’t sure he could love. He’d never loved another so what if he failed? A part of me knew he was scared but the terrified part of me refused to see his

His words broke my heart. We should have talked about this earlier, planned better, but I was pregnant already and I loved my baby already. They were a gift from the goddess, a gift I planned to cherish until my last breath.
