Lily stayed silent. Whenever Lily used to visit the Fulton Manor, she would meet Emma there, and the both of them got along swimmingly. Emma loved to joke around and would tease Lily about Xavier. 

Lily would blush furiously from the teasing every time, but she would feel sweet and content on the inside. 

At that moment, however, what she felt was a pang of bitterness in her chest, and her expression was somewhat stiff. 

Emina and the rest would only say things like, “Oh look. Mrs. Fulton is blushing.” 

“Mrs. Fulton only has eyes for Mr. Fulton.”

They had never said anything about how Xavier felt or did for Lily. To them, there was nothing wrong with it. After all, even Lily herself had enjoyed it. 

“Mrs. Fulton?” Lily didn’t know what Emma had said, but Emma waved her hand in front of Lily’s lace when the older woman noticed her silence. “Why are you so quiet? 

“What?” Lily instantly snapped out of her thoughts. 

Emma covered her mouth as she chuckled, “Every time we talk about Mr. Fulton, you get all shy and lost in thought. I was asking what is it that you like about Mr. Fulton!” 

Lily answered mechanically, “He’s handsome. He has a great body. Even without wealth or power, he’s the type of man that women find irresistible.” 

Lily was only entertaining Emma, but as soon as the words left her mouth, she caught the reflection of a tall, muscular man standing behind her. 

Lily turned around and realized that Xavier had come downstairs without her noticing. He had his hands in his pockets. A faint smile was on his lips, and he looked to be in a good mood. 

Xavier thought his guesses were correct. Lily’s constant aloofness and dramatic attempts at divorce were only her methods to gain his attention. He was sure that even her closeness with Terence was just a test for him. 

Xavier blamed himself for losing his composure and almost letting her lead him by the nose 

“Mr. Fulton, how did you not make a sound and eavesdrop on us? Mrs. Fulton is all embarrassed now,” Emma teased. 

Lily turned away again. Xavier would be happy with these sorts of remarks, so there was no need for her to explain herself. Only an inexplicable resistance welled up inside her.

Emma sighed and said, “He’s not coming back tonight if he’s leaving at this hour. He won’t be able to last long like this even if his health is good.” 

“You can go ahead with the coolding. I’ll bring it to him in the office later,” Lily said. She wasn’t sure what kind of emotion made her say that. 

She only knew that her words stirred up the inner conflict within her, and it threatened to tear her apart.
